Celebrities React: Donald Trump Voter Fraud “Major Investigation” Tweets
Celebrities are reacting to President Trump’s voter fraud claims, and his vow to order a “major investigation” into the presidential election. See stars’ reaction tweets below.
Prior to the 2016 election, Trump expressed his belief that the votes would be “rigged.” He ended up winning the electoral college, but lost the popular vote. As a result, he has repeatedly claimed “millions” voted illegally, leading to the split results. Despite there being no evidence to support this allegation, the new president is now promising to take action.
Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning, “I will be asking for a major investigation into VOTER FRAUD, including those registered to vote in two states, those who are illegal and even, those registered to vote who are dead (and many for a long time). Depending on results, we will strengthen up voting procedures!”
In response, Stephen Colbert cracked on Twitter, “Trump says three to five million people cast votes illegally. Man, he’s really taking Meryl’s Oscar nom hard.” Patton Oswalt joked that the person to investigate is “Boise, Idaho resident ‘Heywood Jablowme.'” More seriously, Senator Bernie Sanders, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination, tweeted, “The great political crisis we face is not voter fraud, which barely exists. It’s voter suppression and the denial of voting rights.”
“Word of the day: Machiavellian,” posted Katy Perry. Judd Apatow retweeted Nicholas Kristof, who remarked, “Trump is right that there was a problem with the 2016 election. But the problem wasn’t illegal voters. It was Russian manipulation.” Apatow went on to write himself, “So Trump is either the dumbest man alive or a tyrant trying to prime the pump for more voter restrictions to gain more power.”
Sophia Bush also retweeted another Kristof point, in which he said, “Trump doubles down, when he should be changing the subject. One review found 31 fraudulent ballots over 14 years, out of 1 billion cast.” Ellen Pompeo commented, “This whole voter fraud tantrum is a smokescreen to abolish voting rights act.” Alyssa Milano asked, “Will the U.S. taxpayers be paying for this as well as the ineffective wall, @realDonaldTrump?”
“DONT [BE] FOOLED BY TRUMP’S SHINY (THE DOG ATE MY POPULAR VOTE) TOY,” Cher tweeted. “GOP WET DREAM HAS ALWAYS BEEN2 EXPAND VOTER SUPPRESSION (OF BLK & LATINO) LAWS.” Joy Behar wrote, “If there was voter fraud, I say let’s do it over again!” She also said that during “The View” discussion on voter fraud.
Even before Trump’s new call for a “major investigation,” Jane Lynch posted on Tuesday night, “I’m concerned. We are riveted by Trump crowd # and voter fraud claims. Should be paying mind to executive orders & cabinet appointments.” And earlier in the day, John Legend said, “Voting LEGALLY is inconvenient and worth only one vote among millions. Why would anyone go through that AND risk jail. Voter fraud is a myth.”
