Celebrities React: Donald Trump, Arnold Schwarzenegger National Prayer Breakfast Feud
On Thursday morning, like presidents before him, Trump attended the annual National Prayer Breakfast. But unlike his predecessors, he decided to use part of his speech to take a swipe at a perceived rival. “We had tremendous success on ‘The Apprentice,” he said. “When I ran for president, I had to leave the show. That’s when I knew for sure I was doing it.”
Trump continued, “And they hired a big, big movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to take my place. And we know how that turned out. The ratings went right down the tubes. It’s been a total disaster, and Mark [Burnett] will never, ever bet against Trump again. And I wanna just pray for Arnold, if we can, for those ratings.”
The president then laughed, and a smattering of laughs could be heard in the background. Trump’s remarks followed an introduction from Burnett, who produces “Celebrity Apprentice,” and comes just days after Schwarzenegger criticized Trump’s immigration order. Now a number of Hollywood names are reacting to the president going there during this particular event.
Carey Hart tweeted, “This dude seriously talkin about ratings on a junk tv show? Time to put your big boy pants on.” Sophia Bush wrote, “He prays for corps buying off politicians, Apprentice ratings for Arnold, but not the SEAL who died in his rushed, botched raid? Shameful.” Don Cheadle retweeted a political science professor, who observed, “Calls with world leaders: Talks about crowd sizes. Black history month event: Attacks CNN. National Prayer Breakfast: Touts Apprentice ratings.”
Chelsea Clinton reposted the clip of Trump’s comments, writing, “No, no, no. Thinking of Isaiah 40:29-31.” Henry Winkler simply wrote in response to the footage, “Bless you.” After a spokesperson for Schwarzenegger said he’s “praying that President Trump can start improving his own approval ratings,” Jason Biggs tweeted, “HAAAAAAA,” with several fire emojis.
“You can’t make this up… This fool says #thehellwithit & asks for #prayeforratings at #nationalprayerbreakfast,” Star Jones remarked. Cher wrote, “TRUMP INSULTS AUSTRALIA, THREATENS MILITARY ACTION AGAINST MEXICO, CHALLENGES CHINA, 4GIVES RUSSA & IRANS CLOSE TIES. BETTER ARNOLD THAN TRUMP.” But taking the opposing view and slamming Schwazenegger was Chuck Woolery, who tweeted, “Don’t get too exercised ‘Arnold Schwarzenegger’ is a European Progressive disguised as a Republican. Oh now I understand.”
As Gossip Cop reported, Schwarzenegger himself responded to Trump by suggesting they “switch jobs” so people can “sleep comfortably” again. That prompted Judd Apatow to tweet, “Not that comfortably but certainly more comfortably.”
