Chris Cornell, the founder and lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, died Wednesday night at the age of 52. The star was on tour with Soundgarden in Detroit at the time of his death, which his rep termed “sudden and unexpected.” Later, the Wayne County, Michigan medical examiner determined that Cornell had committed suicide by hanging himself. Hollywood celebrities have taken to Twitter to mourn and react to the death of one of the early pioneers of grunge. See stars’ tweets below.

Elijah Wood tweeted, “Oh man. Sad to hear of the passing of Chris Cornell.” Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote, “RIP Chris Cornell.” In addition to sharing a number of Cornell’s songs on Twitter, Ken Jeong‏ said, “Oh, man. RIP @chriscornell, one of my favorite singers ever.” And Carson Daly expressed, “I’m so shocked to wake up and hear about the sudden passing of Chris Cornell. A quintessential voice of a generation. Praying for his family.”

Meanwhile, musician Billy Idol shared, “Sad 2 hear of Chris Cornell passing. Great singer and artist… another blow… RIP.” Elton John offered, “Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of @chriscornell. A great singer, songwriter and the loveliest man.” “Rest In Peace @ChrisCornell,” Ozzy Osbourne said. And Adam Lambert tweeted, “RIP CHRIS CORNELL.”

Nile Rogers said, “A mutual friend called me and tells me my bro passed away. #RIPChrisCornell You are a great artist Love to Vicki and fam.” “I AM SO SADDENED BY CHRIS CORNELL PASSING. @soundgarden TOTAL SHOCK. GREAT MAN. GREAT BAND. GREAT LOSS. LOVE TO EVERYONE IN HIS WORLD,” Gavin Rossdale expressed. And Led Zeppelin founder Jimmy Page wrote, “RIP Chris Cornell. Incredibly Talented. Incredibly Young. Incredibly Missed.”

Kevin Bacon shared, “One of the greatest rock voices to ever pick up a microphone #RIP.” Chris Rock paid tribute to the late singer by tweeting lyrics from Soundgarden’s “The Day I Tried To Live.” “the words u say never seem 2 live up 2 the ones inside you head. The lives we make never seem to get us anywhere,” he said. Slash wrote, “Shocked & saddened by the news of Chris Cornell’s passing.
