Brock Turner, the former Stanford University swimmer who was sentenced to six months in prison for sexually assaulting an unconscious girl on campus, was released Friday after serving only half his sentence. Celebrities are now reacting to what is being deemed a major miscarriage of justice. See stars’ outraged reactions below.

Turner was convicted in March of felony sexual assault after digitally penetrating an intoxicated woman who he found passed out by the dumpster outside of a fraternity house. The former student was facing up to 14 years in prison for his crime, but prosecutors only asked he serve six years. Instead, a judge ruled he should be jailed for six months, and on Friday, Turner was freed after only spending three months behind bars, having been released for good behavior.

Many celebrities have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment in how the legal system handled what’s now known as “the Stanford rape case.” Jeffrey Wright tweeted, “If only Brock Turner were a poor undocumented Mexican immigrant & not ‘an All-American boy,’ Trumpists cld use him to vilify a whole people.” Taraji P. Henson wrote, “SMH disgraceful!!! #WhatAboutTheVictim.” And in regard to Turner’s short sentence, John Fugelsang noted, “There was stuff in my fridge when Brock Turner went to jail that’s still there.”

During Turner’s trial, his victim wrote a powerful letter detailing her harrowing experience, the emotional and physical suffering she endured, and her continuing struggles in the aftermath of the incident. Making note of this, Andy Richter said, “Read his victim’s statement. Re-read it if you’ve read it before. Who’s being punished here?” Jaime King similarly conveyed to her followers, “I ask you to re-read the letter written by the victim.” Eric McCormack offered, “Dads, let’s all take 20 mins with our sons and talk about respect 4 women #dadswhogiveadamn.” And finally, Arsenio Hall stated, “I Stand With Survivors Of Sexual Abuse.” Gossip Cop will update as more celebrities react to Turner’s release from prison.
