Though widely speculated, Manilow formally confirmed his sexual orientation for the first time in a new People cover story released on Wednesday. In it, the singer revealed he’s been in a relationship with his manager, Garry Kief, for nearly 40 years. The two married in 2014.
Manilow’s candid comments about his personal life have prompted an outpouring of support from fellow celebs on social media, but also some jokes, too. Andy Cohen tweeted, “Welcome to the team, Barry! See you at the Copa!” George Takei similarly said, “Congratulations @BarryManilow on coming out! Welcome to the club. #NeverTooLate.”
“My mom raised me well. She raised me to adore u @BarryManilow! Thrilled to add my own admiration today. Thank u for #ComingOUT 2 the world,” wrote Dustin Lance Black. Rosie Perez quoted blogger Tony Posnanski, who said, “It’s not shocking that Barry Manilow came out. It’s just sad we live in a society where you have to come out and not be who you are.” She personally added, “Well said. Good for you @barrymanilow. Your music has given me much joy. Hope decision to come out brings you continued happiness/freedom.”
Also offering some perspective was Anna Kendrick, who posted, “Lot of people seem really proud of themselves for announcing they ‘already knew’ Barry Manilow was gay. Yeah… ur the true heroes today guys.” Billy Eichner quipped, “Can’t wait until I come out. Not telling you when I’m gonna do it but it’s gonna be BIG.” Dianne Warren also joked, “Just found out Barry Manilow is gay. Still in shock.”
And Patton Oswalt amusingly mixed up the day’s big news stories. He tweeted, “A little good news for once: Barry Manilow no longer has NSC clearance and Steve Bannon’s come out as gay. I applaud them both.”
