Carrie Underwood: I Support Gay Marriage

Truth rating: 10

Carrie Underwood has come out in support of same-sex marriage.

The devoutly Christian country star explains her position in a new interview with The Independent.

“As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry,” says Underwood. “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.”

Underwood married hockey player Mike Fisher in 2010.

The singer, who was raised in a Baptist church, says she and Fisher attend a non-denominational congregation she describes as “gay friendly.”

Underwood explains, “Above all, God wanted us to love others. It’s not about setting rules, or [saying] ‘Everyone has to be like me.’ No. We’re all different. That’s what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody.”

The onetime “American Idol” champ says she disagrees with “people who use the Bible for hate.”

“That’s not how I would want myself as a Christian to be represented,” says Underwood.

I love her even more now for this. I myself am Christian, but not all of us are against gay marriage. It is a very controversal issue, but I agree with Carrie, I cannot stand it when someone uses the Bible against others. That’s not how Christians are and that’s not how we want to be represented. She has always been one of my favorite singers, but I love her even more now. Go Carrie!

I agree. I’m a Christian also I refuse to judge gay people or anyone else. If it really is a sin God will judge them when they stand before Him. That being said, we are ALL sinners so we’ll also be judged. The ones who openly hate, Westboro Baptist Church anyone, will also have to stand before God and be judged.

If you go and read the actual article, you will see she never said anything about supporting gay marriage. She said she couldn’t imagine if she couldn’t marry the person she loves & everyone has a right to love who they want to love and that her church is “gay friendly”. She was probably asked her opinion since she hardly ever speaks on things like this & she gave very vague answers to please the masses. There’s a reason she hasn’t said anything since this story broke.
Of course God is a loving God, but he is also a just God. I don’t judge anyone, but I also refuse to give in to what the world believes because they say “God is love and you should love as well”. My aunt is gay & I love her to death, but it doesn’t mean I have to agree with how she lives her life. Just like some of my family won’t agree with how I live my life, but they still love me & will always do[words from my aunt].

Well said…I agree 100%. And I respect Carrie for giving this issue her voice.

I am also a Christian while I’m not against people being gay I AM AGAINST gay marriage. We can’t compromise Gods world marriage was intended for a Man and Woman. Yes being gay is a sin just as lying, stealing. disrespecting our parents is etc etc and there all as bad as one another and I’ve done a few of those things so I’d never judge someone because of there sexuality BUT publically saying it’s right to carry out homosexual acts or to marry someone of the same sex is WRONG just as a Christian telling everyone it’s OK to lie, murder, disrespect our parents would ALSO be wrong. I don’t go around telling people how they are living their life is wrong as it’s not my place to judge but as a Christian when asked we shouldn’t compromise our faith and the word of God just to be accepted by the people and the world we live in.

  • Amy

You can’t say that being gay is WRONG, and say that Carrie Underwood is WRONG for saying what she did…and then go on to say that it’s not your place to judge. If you’re going to pass judgement on someone elses action, (calling them wrong) then you are judging them, which is WRONG.

You say that as Christians you shouldn’t have to compromise your faith or the word of God to be accepted. Well then why should gay people have to compromise their right to their own happiness to be accepted? Equal rights means equal rights, plain and simple. People may not agree with their lifestyle, but that does not give them the right to judge them and limit their rights.

Thank you carrie!!!! It is AMAZING that a heterosexual country music singer is supporting our rights. That step surely wasn’t easy for you, and I appreciate it even more!! Have been a fan of yours for years, and will be a even bigger one now. My wife and me can’t wait to see your show in London next week! :D

    Disagreeing does not equal judging.

Plus don’t forget equal LEGAL rights does not necessarily equal rights in the eyes of a religion.

Me….I can’t imagine God not loving something he created….and God created gays….so by some Christians saying homosexuality is wrong to me means they are saying God is wrong.

  • Chris

God created your aunt…correct? Do you think it’s a choice of hers to be gay or is it just part of her makeup (like being a woman)? If it’s just part of her, why would God create an abomination? Why would God not want her to be in a loving relationship like you?

  • Kaylee

    Gross! Get a boyfriend

Did you see anywhere in my comment about her being an abomination? I never said that. I said I didn’t agree with it, but I still love my aunt to death. Besides, even though she came out & everyone accepted her as she is, she’s still not happy. So that’s not my problem.
God did create her, he made all of us in His image. But if you want to go there, He didn’t create sin. Man created it & God gave us to choice to live our lives as we want to. Whether we’re with Him or not.

  • Anonymous

Saying that homosexuality is wrong isn’t saying that God is wrong. He made people who decided to kill, lie, cheat, steal. We don’t agree with how they live their lives. People will do what they want to, God gave us the free will to do what we please.

  • Nom De Guerre

    I’m pro-family.

In her statement, Carrie said, “Above all, God wanted us to love others.” Carrie should at least get the facts straight (no pun intended). When the religious leaders of His day asked Jesus what is the most important of all the commandments, Jesus responded:

“Jesus answered him, ‘The first of all the commandments is: `Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.` This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: `You shall love your neighbor as yourself.` There is no other commandment greater than these.’” Mark 12:29-31 (NKJV)

So, above all, God wants us to love Him wholly, with heart, soul, mind and strength. In John 14:15, Jesus indicates that those who love Him (God), will keep His commandments. Other scriptures indicate that God sees homosexuality as abominable (loathsome) and sinful. It goes against the Creator’s design.

By the way, how is supporting and/or enabling others’ dysfunction showing love?

  • http://twitter.com/Stewman1965 Bill Steward

This whole “hate” thing has been unjustly applied to all Christians who believe the Bible does set limits and does condemn ALL Sin, not just homosexuality…. Yes, Christians are supposed to love everyone with a Godly love, however, what Carrie failed to mention is that Love doesn’t mean we have to agree with nor accept someone’s lifestyle when it goes against God’s Word… If you have a brother or sister that is addicted to drugs, you don’t stop loving them, but neither do you love their addiction to drugs, even though they have the option to live any way they choose… So, most of us that disagree with Carrie, do so NOT because we feel gays are a worse group of people than others but because condoning sin, ANY SIN, is simply not found in the Bible… I would have been just as upset with Carrie had she condoned Premarital Sex, based on her Biblical View…
