Caleb Johnson Gets Standing Ovation for Led Zeppelin Cover on American Idol

Truth rating: 10

Caleb Johnson rocked out and received a standing ovation for his efforts on Wednesday’s “American Idol.” The contestant got both Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban on their feet with “Dazed and Confused” by Led Zeppelin.

“Here’s something that I didn’t see from you before — that was very sexy,” said Lopez. She said that sexiness factor “takes [Johnson’s performance] to another level.”

Urban first noted the night’s “I’m With the Band” theme. He then told Johnson, “You’re such a good front man, that was like the band was saying, ‘I’m with the singer.'” In other words, in Urban’s eyes, Johnson completely dominated the stage, and overshadowed (in a good way) the other musicians on the performance. Harry Connick Jr. simply declared, “I just don’t know how you could have sung that tune any better.”

Johnson’s performance came on Top 9 Night. Like the other contestants, he was joined by the “American Idol” house band, and got to select his own song. The night’s theme seemed perfectly suited to Johnson, who has proven to be the season’s lone hard rocker. He was the second-to-last performer of the night, giving competitor Jena Irene a tough act to follow.
