Caitlyn Jenner Will NOT Be Charged For Fatal Car Crash — SEE STATEMENT
Caitlyn Jenner will NOT be charged with any crimes for February’s fatal car crash, it was announced on Wednesday.
As Gossip Cop reported, Jenner (who was then Bruce) was driving on Pacific Coast Highway when she caused a chain-reaction accident. Jenner first hit a vehicle driven by Kim Howe, which was pushed into oncoming traffic and struck by a Hummer, leading to her death. She then plowed into the car ahead of Howe, driven by Jessica Steindorff.
Jenner cooperated with authorities at the scene, but was not arrested. In the months since, investigators have been pouring over surveillance footage and other evidence to determine whether the transgender star committed any crimes. But now, after reviewing the Los Angeles Sheriff Department’s case file, the Los Angeles District Attorney has determined that Jenner did not do anything illegal to support a conviction.
In rejecting the case and declining to prosecute Jenner, the D.A. cited several factors. It was determined that the former Olympian was NOT speeding, as Gossip Cop had already reported, and that she hit her brakes in hopes of avoiding the accident. All together, the D.A. felt that even though Jenner had caused the incident, she did not act “unreasonably” in any way, and there wasn’t enough evidence to convict her otherwise.
In a statement to Gossip Cop, Jenner’s attorney now says, “We believed from the start that a thorough and objective investigation would clear Caitlyn of any criminal wrongdoing. We are heartened the District Attorney has agreed that even a misdemeanor charge would not be appropriate. A traffic accident, however devastating and heartbreaking when a life is lost, is not necessarily a criminal matter.”
Jenner could have been charged with vehicular manslaughter, and admitted in a “Today” interview earlier this month that she was concerned about potentially being forced to go to a men’s prison. But while the criminal case may now be resolved, Jenner is still facing several civil lawsuits, from Steindorff and Howe’s estate. Those cases are still pending, and Gossip Cop will have updates.
