Caitlyn Jenner Halloween Costume Sparks Petition (PHOTO)
A Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume is being slammed as transphobic and has sparked a petition to have the item yanked from retailers. See photo right and below.
Spirit Halloween, a retailer with stores throughout the U.S., recently confirmed that it will sell the “Call Me Caitlyn Unisex Adult Costume.” The set features a padded lingerie-like top similar to the one Jenner wore on the cover of Vanity Fair earlier this year when she made her official debut as a woman. Also included are a wig and a pageant sash that says “Call Me Caitlyn,” and it’s being promoted with an image of a man dressed up with all the items.
The costume package is also available through online sites like AnytimeCostumes.com, which has it listed under its “Humorous” offerings, and says it will “get a few laughs out of your friends.” But many are finding nothing funny about the costume, instead seeing it as insensitive at best and offensive at worst. Being transgender, of course, is not a “costume” that people put on, and that’s the point of a Change.org petition that has garnered more than 3,000 signatures in one day.
Addison Vincent, a California native who started the petition, wrote in her explanation:
“To Spirit Halloween: We demand that you revoke your ideas and production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume for Halloween. With a reputation of sexist, racist, and culturally appropriative costumes, we are concerned that this costume will continue your oppressive tradition with a transphobic costume of Caitlyn Jenner. Yes, as your PR and marketing head Trisha Lombardo stated in an interview, Caitlyn Jenner is a hero and celebrated in modern day culture, but that doesn’t excuse the exploitation and transphobia you’ll be committing this Halloween.”
“To make a costume out of a marginalized identity reduces that person and community to a stereotype for privileged people to abuse,” argues Vincent, who identifies herself as a “Transfeminine Genderqueer Activist.” She goes on to point out, “At a time when trans women… are being murdered at such a high rate, and homelessness, unemployment, and inaccessbility [sic] to healthcare run rampant in our community, making fun of one or all of us is utterly insensitive and deplorable.”
Vincent concludes, “Do not turn Cailtyn Jenner into a costume. Your profit will only lead to greater transphobia and marginalization of an already at-risk community.” So far, however, Spirit seems to be standing by its decision to sell the costume, saying its “proud” to “celebrate” the year’s “most important real-life superhero.” Meanwhile, supporters have noted how other celebrities have inspired Halloween costumes in years’ past, and some on social media have even suggested a “couples” costume set featuring his-and-hers Bruce and Caitlyn outfits.
For her part, Jenner hasn’t commented either way. See the full photo of the costume below, and tell us what you think.
