Caitlyn Jenner: “I Get More Flak For Being Republican Than Transgender”
Caitlyn Jenner says she gets more “flak” for her Republican views than she does for being transgender.
The star made the admission during a talk Wednesday at the University of Pennsylvania. Asked why she wasn’t a Democrat, given the party’s support for transgender rights, Jenner told the crowd, “I have gotten more flack for being a conservative Republican than I have for being trans.” She was joined on stage by writer Buzz Bissinger, who noted, “Just because you change gender doesn’t mean you change your core beliefs.”
At one point, Jenner was reportedly in tears when reflecting on her father, who died long before she came out. She said she now likes to imagine her dad is thinking, “You know what, you’re doing a good job. You’re making a difference.” That said, Jenner insisted she wasn’t a “role model,” explaining, “I’m so new to this community, I don’t expect to be one.”
The former Olympian and reality star also shot down the accusation that she publicly transitioned for fame and fortune. “I don’t need the money. So I don’t understand that claim,” she told the audience. “No one who transitions for financial gain. No way.”
As Gossip Cop reported, Bissinger authored Jenner’s coming-out profile in Vanity Fair, and now the two are working on her memoir together. The book is tentatively slated to be published in the spring of 2017.
