Caitlyn Jenner To Receive ESPYs Arthur Ashe Courage Award
Caitlyn Jenner will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPYs on July 15. The news was announced on Monday, shortly after Caitlyn Jenner (formerly known as Bruce Jenner) revealed herself on Vanity Fair’s July cover. Past winners of the prestigious Arthur Ashe Award include “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts, first openly gay NFL player Michael Sam, Muhammad Ali, and Nelson Mandela.
In a statement, Jenner thanked everyone for the “overwhelming outpouring of support,” and noted, “being honored with this award, which is named after one of my heroes, is truly special. For the first time this July, I will be able to stand as my true self in front of my peers.”
As Gossip Cop reported earlier on Monday, Caitlyn Jenner made her big debut on Vanity Fair, and said in an accompanying interview that Bruce Jenner “always had to tell a lie.” She continued, “Every day he always had a secret, from morning till night. Caitlyn doesn’t have any secrets… I’m free.” Jenner, who also joined Twitter on Monday, wrote, “I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/me.”
Maura Mandt, the executive producer of The ESPYS, said, “Bruce has received many accolades over the years for being one of the greatest Olympians of our time but The ESPYS are honored to celebrate Bruce becoming Caitlyn.” She added, “[Jenner] has shown the courage to embrace a truth that had been hidden for years, and to embark on a journey that may not only give comfort to those facing similar circumstances, but can also help to educate people on the challenges that the transgender community faces.”
