Caitlyn Jenner Tells Ellen DeGeneres: Why I Was Against Gay Marriage (VIDEO)
Though the episode will not air until Tuesday, preview clips released Friday show DeGeneres and Jenner discussing a variety of topics related to the latter’s transition. In one teaser, DeGeneres brings up Jenner being a conservative, and points out that many Republicans would vote against issues related to transgender people. Jenner responds, “I agree with that in some cases.”
“I have to admit that I remember 15 years ago or 20 years ago, whatever it was, when the whole gay marriage issue [first] came up, at first I was not for it,” confesses Jenner. “I thought, I’m a traditionalist. I’m older than a lot of people in the audience. I kind of like tradition, and it’s always been between a man and a woman. And I’m thinking, I don’t quite get it.”
Jenner continues, “But as time has gone on, I think, like a lot of people on this issue have really changed their thinking here to I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness. That’s not my job. If that word ‘marriage’ is really, really that important to you, I can go with it.”
DeGeneres calls out Jenner for still seeming “not on board with it,” and the Olympian insists that’s not the case. “It’s pretty much going to be the law of the land. So I feel like I’m okay with it,” she tells the host, who later asks Jenner whether she will be dating men or women.
“This is a tremendous issue with the trans community,” replies Jenner. She goes on, “Everybody would love to have a partner, everybody wants to have a family… For me, I’m at such a different place in life. I already had too many children — just kidding.”
Jenner, who biologically fathered six kids and is the stepfather to four more, more seriously adds, “I’m kind of past that stage in my life. But, yes, would I like to find a partner in life to share my life with? Yeah. I’m sure I will at some point.” She never actually answers the men/women question, and laughs when DeGeneres asks whether her eventual significant other will be Candis Cayne.
The rest of the appearance is less tense in tone, though still serious as Jenner talks about hiding her identity for so many years, how she used to secretly cross-dress, and the support her family has since given her. And the star also makes good on a promise she made on “I Am Cait” to financially assist transgender woman Blossom Brown with DeGeneres’ help. Watch all the videos below, and tell us what you think.
