Bully Rating Protest Movement Picks Up Momentum, Celebrity Support

Truth rating: 10

(Weinstein Co.)

More and more celebrities are voicing their support for Bully, a documentary that explores the crisis of school bullying but now faces an unexpectedly controversial release.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) stunned producers by giving Bully an “R” rating for a handful of swear words, essentially ruling that the audience most likely to be impacted by the film (school kids) will be restricted from seeing it.

A high school junior (and bullying victim) named Katy Butler has started an online petition to get the rating reduced to “PG-13,” and her efforts have already led to more than 300,000 signatures and the support of politicians and movie stars.

Johnny Depp and Ellen DeGeneres have been vocal supporters of the project, and Justin Bieber tweeted information about Bully to his millions of followers.

NFL star Drew Brees, Kelly Ripa and Anderson Cooper have voiced support for Bully, too.

Meryl Streep and her daughter Mamie Gummer will co-host a screening of the film in New York on March 20, and Tommy Hilfiger will design a T-shirt inspired by the film’s poster, with a portion of proceeds going to Bully’s charitable educational partner.

Bully is due to be released on March 30.

I have been bullied in a time when parents thought it was ok, it toughens the kid up. So I never spoke up, I wanted to be tough.

But seeing my kid going through the same, made me speak up, I did not want him to have them youth as me. I am glad I did, together with the anti bulling programm at school he has somuch more fun is way happier :)

So yes I am glad movies like these are coming out and I hope it makes people aware how hurtfull it can be and hope they will think twice about what they say to one and other. Respect is always the keyword people :)

I will be allowing my 10 yr old to watch because I feel it is that important for kids to see! If you don’t think they already hear that kind of language at school you have got your head in the sand

Wow! This seems like an amazing documentary. I was always that one kid that made friends with the kid who was always being bullied and I always stood up for him. I wasn’t cool by any means, but it gave me a sense of self worth to know that I was making a difference in someone’s day, however small. By any means, those are the people that you want to be your friends, not the ones that bully to begin with. They are the ones who grow up and become useless in life.

They should have a field trip to the theaters so kids can see this movie. Bullying is no joke & needs to be dealt with in schools.
My younger sister’s hair was always being pulled by this one little boy in her class to the point that she had a bald spot on her head. She always told the yard duty & the kid would be put in detention, but he would come out and bother her again. So I told her to tell an adult at least 3 times & if they do nothing about then handle it yourself. Needless to say, she never had him bother her again.

since most of the kids now has its own phone and i believe most of them are with camera, i think what they can do is to video these incident and report it to the right authority. these bullies should be put out there. i was also a victim and i fought back, not violently though. but i know how to answer back and let them feel that i am ready. i was always on guard. yes, i believe it can toughen you, but there was a times i noticed that i was always on a defensive mode. i know it was not normal. but it was a big help. when the bullying stopped, i nursed myself back to normalcy. it was a struggle but then it helped me how to deal with it.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT KIDS ARE ALLOW TO GET CONDOMS AND BIRTH CONTROL WITHOUT PARENTS PERMISSION BUT THEY CANNOT WATCH AN EDUCATION MOVIE WITH SUCH A TERRIBLE PROBLEM THAT CLAIMS KIDS LIFE! ONLY IN THIS COUNTRY, IT’S A DECEPTION TO SAID THAT I AM AN AMERICAN!

  • WHOCARES

So kids are okay to have a PAP SMEAR WITHOUT a parent’s permission, but they are NOT ALLOW to watch an EDUCATIONAL movie that can teach them the horrific outcome of this HUGE DILEMA! WHO IS BEHIND ALL THESE DECISIONS, HE/SHE IS AN ASSWHOLE!

Come on. Give me a break. Kids have heard and seen a lot. Let them see some consequences too.

I have taught my boys to love and respect, love and respect, love and respect. And then bullying was happening and I found that my boys were too loving and respectful to stand up for themselves. My 7yo dealt with a boy regularly bullying him, he would tell him to stop and go to adults as instructed, only to have to continue to deal with it. It took one sentence from the bully to eventually push the final button and my 7yo punched him in the face. (I still giggle a little bit at the thought as he is my sweet loving child). My child was very disappointed in himself for acting that way but I told him that while I will never condone them hitting anyone, that when they have handled it the right way and gone to the adults and it doesn’t stop, I will support them doing whatever they need to do to make it stop. They might get in trouble initially, but I will deal with it from there on. It’s hard finding that balance as a parent, you don’t want you kid being the bully, but you also don’t want to set them up to be bullied.

Bully’s use R rated language and conduct, when they torment and harass kids! This movie is a true account of what children experience – hence to give it a rating that eliminates the ability to view seems very absurd.

Perhaps the MPAA board members should ask the parents and kids who actually took part in the movie, what their thought is on the rating and who should be allowed to see it. Just sayin!
