VIDEO: Katy Perry and Domestic Violence Survivor Brooke Axtell at Grammys – “By The Grace Of God” Grammy Performance
Katy Perry performed an emotional “By The Grace of God” at Sunday’s Grammys, following an introduction by domestic violence survivor Brooke Axtell, who shared her personal story of pain, perseverance and triumph over abuse. Watch the Grammy Awards video below.
First, Axtell told the crowd about her horrifying experience with the man she thought she loved. “I was terrified of him and ashamed I was in this position,” she said, telling the audience, “Authentic love does not devalue another human being… authentic love does not silence, shame or abuse.” Axtell encouraged people to reach out for help if they find themselves in similar situations.
The song itself, written by Perry in the wake of her divorce from Russell Brand, is about finding inner strength amid turmoil. She has said that she found herself in a particularly dark place during that time, and “By The Grace of God” contains some of Perry’s most vulnerable lyrics. Dressed in white while dancers’ shadows moved against a backdrop, she gave a pretty stunning performance, as emotional as her halftime show at last Sunday’s Super Bowl was joyous and spectacular. The audience gave a standing ovation. Watch the video of Katy Perry performing at the 2015 Grammys below, and tell us what you think.
