Bobby Brown Gives First Interview on Whitney Houston’s Death: “I’m Not The Reason She’s Gone”

(NBC)

Bobby Brown has given his first interview since Whitney Houston’s death, sitting down with Matt Lauer of the “Today Show” for a conversation set to air on Wednesday and Thursday.

Lauer asks Houston’s ex about the fact that everyone says the late singer’s life took a dramatic turn for the worse after meeting him.

“It makes me feel terrible,” says Brown, but he rejects that interpretation.

He explains, “If anyone ever knew us, if anybody ever spent time around us instead of time looking through the bubble, they would know how we felt about each other. They would know how happy we were together.”

When Lauer presses Brown on whether it’s fair he got the “blame” for Houston’s drug use and eventual death, Brown takes a stand, insisting that he had not been the one to introduce Houston to narcotics.

Brown says she was using “way, way before. It’s just unexplainable how one could, you know, [say that I] got her addicted to drugs. I’m not the reason she’s gone.”

He tells Lauer that he saw Houston a week before her death, at which point she had a “glow about her” and “looked really well.”

Brown recalls Houston joking around with him and their daughter Bobbi Kristina that night, and that Houston “looked like she was in a good place.”

He says he was “hurt” when he found out cocaine had contributed to her death, saying, “I didn’t know she was struggling with it still.”

“One hit, you know… it could definitely take your life away from you,” laments Brown. “And, unfortunately, that was it.”

No Bobby you aren’t but you still are a moron of epic proportions

I’m sorry he is still in such denial, because there is NO WAY he saw her ‘looking good, with a glow’ a week before she died. I guess it’s all he can handle and how he chooses to think. WE all saw the pictures of how she was looking. WE saw what a mess she was. I don’t blame him though. She was a grown ass woman, doing dope before she got with him. Once they were together they used more and different kinds of dope and it was comfortable for them to be high – remember that reality show? Have to wonder how the producers of those shows watches the messes and still chooses to let them got to air, like Anna Nicole Smith. It was acceptable and it’s sad. Bobby still isn’t right or else he would not have been driving drunk recently or drinking at all. No winners here.

If we were to say for the sake of argument that Bobby Brown IS telling the truth in regards to Whitney using drugs before him, the indisputable fact remains that he didn’t stop her, he didn’t try to take her off the drugs that were damaging her, and he in fact helped continued the usage. That is not something you do to someone you claim to love. You genuinely love someone, you try everything in your power to help them and help them help themselves.. You disengage, not enable. He is just as responsible as she is. And it’s disgusting that he wants to pass the buck instead of claiming responsibility, especially since it’s someone he claims to have been in love with.

I can’t stand bobby beat em down brown. I read more of the interview and it seems like he’s trying to blame Whitney for his drug use. The ass. And he has the nerve to have his new wife there giving the interview too. I bet he’s looking for a new reality show gig. Whitney is gone and can’t defend herself so he should keep his trap shut.

He who seldom speaks, and with one calm well-timed word can strike dumb the loquacious, is a genius or a hero.

When I read these comments and thought about Whitney’s death, I found Heath Ledger, Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson also came to mind. Together, they inspired this blog: http://bit.ly/wQvHLA

Of course he’s going to blame her, she’s not here to defend herself. But, with her history it’s not really a huge leap.

  • Anonymous

He’s 100% correct, he’s not to blame for her drug usage or death; that was her. She was using in secret before he even came into the picture, it just became more open when she realized he was using as well. He couldn’t stop her from using, no one(except God) can help someone who isn’t willing to be helped. He tried to help her get into rehab, but that’s as far as he could go. Yes, he was on drugs, but he got himself off. Whitney had her own demons to struggle with & she needed to deal with that, sadly it took her life. No one is to blame for anything, especially Bobby. She was using before him & continued to use after they were divorced. Stop blaming him for something he had no part of.

You can’t help someone who is not willing to be helped. He’s tried to help her in the past, but it never stuck. She had her own problems to deal with & that was something that he couldn’t help her with. The best thing he could have ever done for her was let the divorce happen. They were toxic to each other & didn’t need to be together.

Sure, what you say is true, but that only works if the partner doesn’t also have a problem. These two thrived on each others illness and/or addiction and so neither was in a position to step back and look at what was going on, to make a move that would help either of them or just themselves. They were doomed and no one on the outside – IF they were allowed to see inside the relationship walls, either knew OR gave a damn to fix whatever they might have known. That is why it’s so shocked to me, to realize that reality show exposed so much to us that we saw, so just imagine the tape they must not have used!

I remember seeing them both tore up several times, laughing and then arguing, typical brain damage from dope – hard dope and alcohol, when people claim to love each other but it’s more about being stuck and afraid to get out. The camera crew and producer MUST have endless disgusting activities, because they seemed to have no shame. Have to wonder when the rag papers get all the stories about this couple or another, why they can’t get those people to speak up and reveal all they know . . . Oh, maybe because they have some ethics that keeps them from telling the rags BUT not enough ethics to tell anyone to get them the help needed to save their life.

Sorry for this rant, but mostly it’s just about Bobby being as sick as she was and unable to help her because he could not help himself.

The ONLY thing an addict is responsible for is their sobriety. IF they fail, then they cannot be help responsible for what drives them to use, because it’s about more than just being able to stop. Add past issues to mental instabilities, along with a physical desire and regular routine, and it becomes about more than just stopping. Dope becomes life blood, more vital than air to breath and a ritual usually hidden to loved ones. It is a horrific way to live, that kills from the inside out.

I agree. I’ve had addicts in my family & saw what having a substance abuse problem can do. You are 100% correct. I wanted to just say that it’s pointless to blame him for her addictions or her death.

Where did I read that Whitney passed from a overdose? better yet…where did you read that..if you read any of the reports..none was conclusive..everything was either a pre-existing condition, or related to her past..or simply still unresolved..one thing I do question is anyone drowning in 6 -12 inches of scalding 90 temps water, especially if she is near 6 feet tall and been swimming all week. Say what you want..but this is not about her X..its about an unsolved mystery and the QUEEN of LOVE still being held out on speculation. WHY IS HE EVEN TALKING?..why isnt he exploiting his new fiance with Being Bobby Brown II…leave Whitney alone!..She said her statements on OPRAH and I believe her…she loved him, he wasnt the bad boy the media stated, however he was NOT a great husband or dad..his main problem was BROKEN PROMISES, infidelity and breaking her heart..he needs to let her RIP and get on with his new life that he started what 6 – 7 years ago.

you don’t know what you are talking about!the only thing you saw is whitney walking out of a club in the middle of the night looking like anybody would look on these circomstances. kelly price said how she was looking a hot damn mess herself when she left the club after dancing all night. but nobody blew this out of proportion like they did whitney.whitney was doing good before she died. there are plenty of videos before she died where she looked just fine, especially all the interviews she gave a couple of months before she passed on the set of her new movie

He was arrested for cocaine in 2008 and a DUI just this year. How clean his he? He needs $$.

  • fluffanater

it was stated by many investigators and by the examiners that she suffered a loss of conciseness before sliding into the tub. she had traces of cocaine in her system…sad but true. Bobby could have done more to help her…but as Whitney said herself…’i am my own demon’….

  • Anonymous

Nope, sorry, she walked into an interview Clive was doing, looking awful and that was not ‘from the club’ . . . She looked like hell on stage too, when she forgot the words to her own songs . . . Hello? Her face was tired and puffy, and her belly was bloated. Regardless of whether anyone suspected or knew of her use of drugs at the time of her death, they had to see how unhealthy she looked and have concerns. Why is everyone in denial? Because those who could have done something – did nothing.

You can call me a b!tch, if you want, but my opinion is if you’ve found that your husband/wife/fiance/gf/bf is addicted to drugs – the best thing you can do is to turn around and leave for good.

  • Mimiblair

I don’t care what Bobby Brown says, as far as I’m concerned he is the reason Whitney Houston started to do drugs, because prior to him, if she was using , it wasn’t obvious. Not to mention the fact that she is no longer here to confirm or deny what he says. He’s always struck me as someone who could hold his own when it comes to lying. So what he has to say now is neither here nor there, Whitney is no longer with us. At this point, he’s just trying to make his self look as good as possible in the public eye.

  • Oliviah

That afternoon she walked into the interview with Clive and Brandy. Whitney looked a mess because it was stated that she just got out of the pool. She had been doing laps in the pool. She also had made a promise to Clive that she was stopping ciagarettes and would be ready to work with him by August. Her bloatedness probably came from her lung issues. Kicking any kind of addiction is not easy. So people can make a clean break, some don’t make it at all and some still deal with the lingering affects of addiction. It is not a joking matter. If you never had to deal with a loved one in an addiction you would understand how hard it was for her family to help her. There is only so much you can do. It’s like trying to catch a ghost with your bear hands or trying to cup water in the palm of your hand. We shouldn’t judge because none of us are perfect. We all loved Whitney she will be missed.

If your comment is directed to me, I am not judging her or giving excuses either. I’ve been there and done with all that, so know how hard it is to break the cycle . . .

  • Nicety

So if she was using before him and not obvious it was fine.If he is lying then several others are lying because the commented the same thing but before he ever said anything.People are always going to have their opinion on this but fact is no one knows and no one will ever know but to blame someone for what a grown ass person does is not right.Whitney Houston was not a puppet and whatever decisions she made were hers.It is your right to not like this man but like him or not you can’t hold him responsible for her action, choices or her death. Her death was a great loss but she was well aware of the dangers of drugs. She had seen its affects and lived its affects and still chose that life and she had ample time to get help, she had people around her who enabled and they are not even to blame. If she was a child that had to be lead by the hand yes you could blame everyone else but when you become and adult you are responsible for your own actions and have to pay the consequences for those actions.I am not saying Brown is this upstanding citizen but he is not the cause of her death Whitney is the cause because she made the choice. She had so much to live for and still made the choice that took her life.
