Blake Shelton Treats SNL Monologue Like Hee Haw – WATCH VIDEO!
Blake Shelton opened his “SNL” monologue by saying he grew up watching “Hee Haw,” which he called “Laugh-in” meets Deliverance. He was then joined onstage by the cast, dressed like country bumpkins in overalls and gingham, much like the cast of “Hee Haw” used to be. Shelton acknowledged, though, that most of the jokes on that show were corny, before launching into a bunch of lames jokes. Everything went south when the cast starting building on his corny about his grandfather and wife’s cooking, and became totally insulting (video below).
This marks not only Shelton’s debut as a host on “SNL,” but also his first time as the musical guest as well. The singer and “Voice” coach joins an elite group of performers who have pulled double duty as both host and musical guest. Among the others who have done this are Paul Simon, Drake, Bruno Mars, and Lady Gaga. A few stars have even filled both roles more than once. Britney Spears was the host and musical guest in 2000 and again in 2002; Jennifer Lopez did it in 2001 and 2010; and Justin Timberlake has balanced both responsibilities three times, in 2003, 2006, and 2013.
Shelton’s appearance on “SNL” is in advance of the return on February 23 of his hit NBC singing competition show, “The Voice.” The country singer has been a coach on the show since its beginning, and his contestants have won four out of the program’s seven seasons, including three wins in a row.
