Black Mass Trailer: Watch Johnny Depp Transformed Into Gangster Whitey Bulger
Johnny Depp’s new action drama Black Mass released its first trailer on Thursday. The actor is nearly unrecognizable as the notorious Boston mob kingpin James “Whitey” Bulger. Watch the trailer below.
The real-life Bulger was sentenced in 2013 to two consecutive life terms in prison after being convicted of 31 counts of racketeering, money laundering, extortion and other weapons charges. Depp underwent extensive makeup to prepare for his new role.
The film boasts an all-star cast including Dakota Johnson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sienna Miller, Joel Edgerton, Jesse Plemons, David Harbour and Kevin Bacon. The crime thriller has gotten a lot of buzz in Hollywood, and the trailer went viral on Thursday. While the ensemble is filled with well-known faces, it’s Depp’s performance that’s generating most of the attention.
In the preview, Depp portrays a balding, steely-eyed Bulger intimidating one of his associates. “You spilled a secret family recipe today,” Bulger says. “Maybe you spill a little something about me tomorrow.” It looks like a tense film, to say the least.
Black Mass is opening in theaters on September 18. Watch the trailer below. How do you think Johnny Depp looks in his portrayal of Bulger?
