Bill Maher Takes Shot At American Sniper: He’s “Psychopath Patriot” (VIDEO)
Bill Maher took a shot at American Sniper on Friday’s “Real Time,” entering the debate over the controversial blockbuster by calling Chris Kyle, the movie’s hero, a “psychopath patriot.” Watch the video below.
The host first mentioned the record-setting $105 million box office haul for American Sniper last weekend, and then brought up his previous week’s guest, The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow. Maher said, “The Hurt Locker made $17 million, because it was a little ambiguous and thoughtful. [American Sniper] is just: ‘American hero! He’s a psychopath patriot, and we love him.'”
Maher then referred to some statements made by the real-life Kyle, like when the Navy SEAL said about his Iraqi foes, “I hate the damn savages.” He also quoted Kyle as saying, “I love killing bad guys… even with the pain, I loved what I was doing. Maybe war isn’t really fun, but I was certainly enjoying it.”
“Eisenhower once said, ‘I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can.’ I just don’t see this guy in the same league as Eisenhower, I’m sorry,” continued Maher. “And if you’re a Christian, I know this is a Christian country, ‘I hate the damn savages, I don’t give a f*ck what happens to them’ — doesn’t seem like a Christian thing to say.”
One of Maher’s guests, Howard Dean, declared, “There’s a lot of anger in this country, and the people who go to see this movie are very angry, and this guy basically says, ‘I’m going to fight on your side.'” Maher’s other guests said it was unfair to take Kyle’s comments out of context, and that the movie was more nuanced than he made it seem.
