Academy Award winner Bill Condon will direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Summit Entertainment announced today.

In a press release, Condon said, “I’m very excited to get the chance to bring the climax of this saga to life on-screen. As fans of the series know, this is a one-of-a-kind book – and we’re hoping to create an equally unique cinematic experience.”

Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight series, said she is “thrilled” Condon is directing and is “excited to see what he does with the material.”

Condon, who won an Oscar in 1999 for Gods and Monsters, was the front-runner for the project, despite a false claim that Gus Van Sant had already “signed” to do the movie and speculation that Michael Mann was a major candidate.

So, a book and film that overwhelmingly has a female audience, that is essentially an epic romance between the two main characters, brought to life by Catherine Hardwicke in the sizzling FIRST film, once again gets a MALE director who most likely will attempt to bring in other demos (read male) and have lots of action, fighting and brawling – much like New Moon, and probably Eclipse…watch as the built-in female audience that would have grown exponentially sending the entire series into the stratosphere, gradually turns off with each successive attempt to draw in action oriented fan boys (which wouldn’t have been coming to see this movie anyway) by making it an ‘action’ movie. What, Summit couldn’t find one other female director — and could only offer 1 of 4 films to a woman director. So, a book written by a woman, in which the narrative is female, read by an audinece that is 99.99% female, which focuses on a genre (romance) that is overwhelmingly female, which features two male sex symbols that appeal to women 8 to 80 (oh yeah – some ‘guy’ is really gonna know how to film their scenes in a sensual ‘object of the gaze,’ way, right?) – gets 3 male directors out of 4. Condon if you’re listening – find out what the #1 fiction genre is in the world, read the millions of fanfics by women on the web, and act accordingly (hint: it’s all about the romance).

Hmm… I’m female, love the books… but love the action oriented sequences in New Moon and can’t wait to see more action in Eclipse! Females do like action, and my boyfriend is actually looking forward to seeing Eclipse with me too (had to drag him to New Moon and Twilight). Given that Steph is now a Producer, she would have given Bill the green light, so she must think he’ll do the film justice.
