Big Hero 6 and Interstellar Rocket To Huge Opening Weekends — But Which Won?
Big Hero 6 and Interstellar both rocketed past the $50 million mark in their opening weekend. Early estimates were too close to declare a winner, but the animated family film ultimately soared beyond the Matthew McConaughey–Anne Hathaway space adventure.
Big Hero 6 debuted to $56.2 million, while Interstellar topped out at $50 million. It was a major success for both films, with the other eight movies in the Top 10 not even in the same box office universe.
Gone Girl landed third, with $6.1 million, beating last week’s chart-topper, Ouija, which fell to number four after taking in $6 million. The Bill Murray–Melissa McCarthy comedy St. Vincent followed in fifth, earning $5.7 million.
In its second weekend, Nightcrawler earned $5.5 million and the number six spot. World II tank drama Fury was right behind, with $5.5 million, too, putting it in seventh place. The Keanu Reeves action extravaganza John Wick took eighth place with approximately $4.1 million.
Rounding out the Top 10, children’s book turned life-action adaptation Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day collected $3.5 million to edge out animated The Book of Life’s $2.8 million in another battle of family movies.
