Beyonce Sings Surprise National Anthem at Super Bowl Press Conference (VIDEO)
Beyonce began the press conference for her Super Bowl halftime show with a surprise, live rendition of the national anthem, catching off guard a roomful of reporters primed to ask the singer about her controversial lip-synching at last week’s Presidential Inauguration.
When she concluded her a cappella performance, she asked the assembled journalists, “Any questions?” Beyonce did clear up the conflicting reports about her Inaugural “Star-Spangled Banner.” She explained that she’s a “perfectionist” who didn’t have adequate time to rehearse with the band, and that the magnitude of the event made things too important to leave completely to chance.
“Due to the weather, due to the delay, due to no proper sound check, I did not feel comfortable taking the risk… I decided to sing along with my pre-recorded track, which is very common in the music industry,” said Beyonce, adding, “I’m very proud of my performance.”
When pressed, she clarified that she did actually sing during the Inauguration, along to the pre-recorded track. As for the Super Bowl halftime show, Beyonce declared that she’ll “absolutely be singing live.” “This is what I was born to do,” she explained.
Beyonce would not confirm rumors of a Destiny’s Child reunion at the big game — but her coy response certainly indicated that no one should rule out their presence during the show. She also hinted at a tour announcement to come after the Super Bowl. Stay tuned.
