Did Beyonce Copy “Countdown” Dance?

VIDEO

(YouTube)

Beyonce‘s new video for “Countdown” initially turned heads for showing off the performer’s baby bump, but now there seems to be controversy brewing with the choreography itself.

A number of outlets are pointing out some similarities between “Countdown” and a video made by Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

There’s a brief YouTube video offering a side-by-side comparison of the two works.

Check out the video below!

While there’s no denying the stylistic and choreographic overlap, it’s also worth noting that Beyonce has acknowledged borrowing from other artists’ dances in the past.

It’s also true that the “Countdown” video openly references a number of pop culture touchstones (like Flashdance and Funny Face) that are more immediately recognizable to American viewers than De Keersmaeker’s work.

What do you think about the “Countdown” controversy?

Is borrowing moves more of an homage or a rip-off? Is there a certain threshold?

There aren’t but so many dance moves, so you are bound to borrow somebody’s moves out there. Maybe it’s not Beyonce’s fault, because she probably doesn’t even know this Belgin choreographer and has never seen her moves. If anyone is to be blamed, it’s Beyonce’s choreographer. They are the ones who develop the moves and research the choreography.

I Love How People Act Like They Are The Only People who Think of Something, maybe they did it 1st but theres not telling if someone copied you just thought they created the same thing you thought you created because trust me you probably weren’t the 1st one to do that dance either if a tree falls in the woods and no1 knew it fell? did the tree still fall? Ofcoarse just know one knows it

This is not the first time she was accused of ripping off someone!

I don’t recall Beyonce ever saying she created this choreography or taking credit for the dance moves. -_- Irritating how “controversies” spark out of nothing.

If iI remember correctly, this isn’t the first time she’s been accused of ripping someone’s video ideas off. She has been said to have “borrowed” from lesser-known acts for a while. I’ve also heard that she gave herself a little more writing credit on a few of her songs than she deserved, and left the real writers out. But hey, if she can sleep at night knowing that she’s a theif, that’s on her.

People nowadays can’t do or say anything anymore with someone saying they created it and wants to get paid. It used to be an honor if someone emulated you. When did we become so focused on $$ signs. I like Beyonce and the video and don’t care where it came from. Thanks to whomever had it first.

I disagree with anyone saying that Beyonce’s video is just an homage, inspired or incident. It was clearly ripped off step-by-step. And the public is soo confused, thinking there’s a flash dance reference when really it is still taken from Anne Teresa’s film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxbrHPAa9mE

In actuality, most of the modern dance moves were inspired by african dance. Beyonce always says who inspires her videos and songs. I’m really tired of people claiming someone ripped something from someone. Name me one song, dress, etc. that you claim is entirely original I can name you four songs, dresses, etc. from the past that sound, look, etc, very similar to it. Please sit down and let her music inspire you, life is too short to waste one minute on jealousy and hate.

I’m sure she got permission from the other chick. Cos that’s pretty obvious, the dance moves.

clearly people are missing the point, of course MOVEMENT will always be ‘copied/ borrowed/ developed’ but its the choreography, artistic view and structure that has been completly taken, if you are the choreographer of Beyonce then its YOUR JOB to make sure you create something independant to her name and reputation. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, is a known choreographer in the ‘dance’ world. how silly.

I am a contempoary choreographer and like most others, our work is often fround upon and seen as dual.!! In the video countdown we see contempoary dance now made ‘Cool’ if i dare say so, where hundreds if not thousands will say how good it is, most likely learn it and film spoofs of ‘thier version’. oh and Beyonce will most likely make £££££ from this already exsisting contempoary dance piece, maybe people should get to the theatre more often??

it obviously wernt beyonces fault. she hasnt copied it all so why is it on the news and everything? this can make critics hate her even more. IDIOTS

  • Bullheaded18

As long as Beyonce doesn’t take credit for the dance moves then I feel that its no big deal. Its seems obvious to me that she is emulating De Keersmaeker’s work (from the hair to the clothes to the dancing) but again, as long as Bey or her choreographer don’t take credit for creating these dances then it shouldn’t be a controversy. In fact, its works in favor of De Keersmaker because those who didn’t know of her….are now aware of her…so… she could possibly pick up additional fans. Not bad.

The dance moves in Beyonce’s video are considered plagiarism because she, nor the director or choreographer asked for permission from the person who created the original video. Not only were the dance moves copied, but so were the costumes, number of background dancers and the theme of the set.
It’s one thing to ask the creator of a work and receive permission BEFORE you “borrow” and another thing to acknowledge and give credit after you’re caught. In most countries and cultures it’s called stealing.

Meaning what exactly… Is Beyoncé just some kind of puppet who only does what the choreographers tell her to do? AND the vid is a huge rip off of de Keersmaeker’s concept. Inspiration can only go so far. The LEAST the producers could have done was actually acknowledging and giving credit for the video to the right person. Shame.
