BET Awards Muhammad Ali Tribute Video – WATCH!
Sunday’s 2016 BET Awards featured a tribute to Muhammad Ali. Watch below.
As Gossip Cop has reported, Ali died earlier this month at age 74 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Since then, tributes have poured in from around the world. But this is the first awards show to acknowledge the shocking loss.
Jamie Foxx took the stage to speak of both Prince and Ali. Of the latter he said, the icon “stood up at at time when no one was standing up. It’s definitely more than just boxing, more than just entertainment, but someone who shaped all our lives.”
Foxx introduced Laila Ali, who noted her late father “lived his life with conviction and purpose.” And despite worldwide fame, “to me and my eight sisters and brothers, he was just dad.” At one point, she became choked up, and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and condolences. Still, she noted, “If he were here today, he would ask you to pray not just for our family, but all of mankind.”
BET CEO and chairwoman Debra Lee teased the tribute on the “Live, Red & Ready” red carpet pre-show, noting that they’ve had several weeks to put something together worthy of the legend. Lee pointed out that when Michael Jackson died in 2009, producers only had three days. She also reminded viewers that Ali was the first to ever receive the BET Humanitarian Award.
“Grey’s Anatomy” star and Black Lives Matter activist Jesse Williams is this year’s honoree. And like so many, he no doubt owes a lot to the road Ali helped paved. Check out video of the BET Awards tribute below.
