Benedict Cumberbatch Engaged to Sophie Hunter!
Benedict Cumberbatch is engaged to marry his longtime girlfriend Sophie Hunter! The actor announced the news on Wednesday with a simple notice in The Times of London. It read, “The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katherine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London.”
A rep for the actor added, “I am delighted to confirm this morning’s announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are engaged.” No wedding date has been given. Hunter, a theater director, met Cumberbatch during the making of the film Burlesque Fairytales in 2009. She has also appeared as an actress in projects like “Torchwood.”
Their low-key engagement announcement (see below), on page 57 of the Times, is in keeping with their relatively under-the-radar relationship. Cumberbatch and Hunter have avoided being photographed together, first being spotted publicly at the French Open in June.
Cumberbatch stars in the upcoming movie The Imitation Game, about computer pioneer and war hero Alan Turing, and has played Sherlock Holmes on the BBC hit “Sherlock” since 2010. He’s appeared in movies like Atonement, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Hobbit.
