Ben Stiller defended Justin Bieber against people who hate on the pop star, arguing that his detractors are just jealous and “want to be him.”

As Gossip Cop reported, Bieber has a cameo in Stiller’s upcoming movie Zoolander 2. And at the film’s premiere in Sydney, Australia on Tuesday night, a reporter for the Australian Associated Press informed Stiller that the audience erupted in cheers during the singer’s highly publicized death scene. “It’s kind of interesting, because what happens to him in the movie indicates how people feel about him,” Stiller admitted. “I think Justin is sort of this cultural figure that, for some reason, he’s very polarizing.”

But Stiller went on to insist that he has nothing but admiration for the pop star, noting, “He’s an incredibly talented guy who, for whatever reason, affects people this way.” The actor added, “But he’s a great kid, and I was very fortunate to have him in the movie.”

As for his theory about why many people enjoy hating on the singer, Stiller speculated, “I think they all want to be him… They all want Justin Bieber’s life, let’s face it.” Regardless, Stiller doesn’t believe The Biebs is particularly fazed by all the bashing, saying, “I think he has a sense of humor about all of it, and I also think he has the last laugh, too.”
