Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell have split. The ex-couple met on Season 20 of “The Bachelor,” which premiered in January 2016, but announced on Monday they’re calling off their engagement.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce our decision to go our separate ways,” the pair told People in a joint statement. “We feel fortunate for the time we had together, and will remain friends with much love and respect for one another. We wish nothing but the best for each other, and ask for your support and understanding at this time.”

Bushnell moved to Higgins’ hometown of Denver shortly after he gave her the final rose on the season finale of “The Bachelor.” The two went on to star in a spinoff series titled “Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?,” which aired for one season. The news of the split comes just weeks after the couple hosted the Freeform special, “Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings.”

In February, Higgins slammed an Us Weekly story claiming he and Bushnell were on the verge of a breakup. The reality star posted an Instagram photo of himself hugging and kissing his then-fiancee, and added, “No need to respond often to rumors or ‘fake news’ but the feeling I have in this picture is the same feeling I have for this girl today… I am still extremely lucky to be able to share life with her and be by her side.” Although the tabloid’s breakup claim was wrong at the time, most “Bachelor” couples don’t end up going the distance. Sadly, Higgins and Bushnell now join that list.

Higgins’ runner-up, JoJo Fletcher, went on to lead “The Bachelorette.” She just celebrated her first anniversary with her own pick, Jordan Rodgers. Nick Viall followed Higgins as the “Bachelor,” and his season ended in March with an engagement to Vanessa Grimaldi. Rachel Lindsay, who competed for Viall’s affections, is now “The Bachelorette.” Her season will premiere next week. Just who will actually make it down the aisle remains to be seen, but Gossip Cop will continue to have coverage.
