Ben Affleck: “I Am Not Running” For Open Senate Seat in Massachusetts

Truth rating: 10

Ben Affleck has ended the speculation as to whether he would be interested in replacing Massachusetts senator John Kerry, who was nominated to replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.

Although the Argo star and director recently sidestepped the Senate question when pressed by Bob Schieffer on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” on Monday Affleck wrote on his Facebook page: “I love Massachusetts and our political process, but I am not running for office.”

“Right now it’s a privilege to spend my time working with Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI), supporting our veterans, drawing attention to the great many who go hungry in the U.S. everyday and using filmmaking to entertain and foster discussion about issues like our relationship to Iran,” he continued.

Affleck added, “We are about to get a great Secretary of State and there are some phenomenal candidates in Massachusetts for his Senate seat. I look forward to an amazing campaign.”

What do you think about Affleck’s decision not to run?

Creative powers can just as easily turn out to be
destructive. It rests solely with the moral personality whether they
apply themselves to good things or to bad. And if this is lacking, no
teacher can supply it or take its place

How did all the rumors start that he was definitely going to run for senator anyway? He even said at the beginning that he wanted to work outside of the formal political framework to make a difference not inside it. Like everything, else it took on a frenzied pr life of it’s own which was really odd. So much so that he has to come back and clear it all up.

Not saying this is not true, but he was a big part of the problem. If he knew he wasn’t running on Sunday, then why not just say so then? He kept up this whole thing by being a tease, which was not necessary. He had plenty of opportunities to clear it up before yesterday.

Testing the waters, but got no support from the constituents/public. Popular opinion… No credibility and too much baggage

No he didn’t. He had to figure out a classy way of not working with Kristen Stewart. It would have been a PR nightmare with the tabloid rumors that were bound to occur if he would have stayed with Focus.

You are so dumb please do not have kids I fear for them

No one would back an actor, plus he would have to give up the big pay days???

  • awww

what a moron. looks more like they disapproved his running there are just too many intellectual minds in ms who can do better than some actor. lol his aspirations were shut down plain and simple; come back in five years and we’ll see.

  • uh

Enough with “celebrities” running for office or people supposing they will. If that’s the best we can do we are in very poor shape ….

Goodness gracious – Ben Affleck is more than an “actor”. He is a highly accomplished screenwriter and director, and has been politically involved in many causes for many years now, and that’s more than just being a face – he actually gets involved on an operational level. There are many people who have run and been elected with a less impressive resume. Ben feels that he has a better forum for his voice with movies – enough said. As far as being evasive when his name first came up, he probably wanted a few days to think about it before making a commitment one way or the other.
For people who say he only matters because he was going to do a movie with KS makes me ask how old are you? KS is an accomplished actress, but she’s pretty much only that. Is she involved in any causes? No. Has she accomplished anything outside of acting? No. Is that saying anything bad about her? No, it’s just saying that she’s involved in what interests her which is acting. She has no obligation to do more. But Ben is involved in much much more and to make this about KS or make any comparison between the two is simply silly. And for the last time, Ben dropping out of that movie had nothing to do with KS.
