Ben Affleck to GQ: Wife Killer Scott Peterson Got Better Press Than I Did

Truth rating: 10

(GQ)

Ben Affleck is one of GQ’s Men of the Year honorees, but the director’s current hot streak of critical success comes after years of media mockery that definitely left a mark.

In a candid conversation with the magazine, Affleck talks about he bad publicity he received about a decade ago, in the midst of some poor career choices and his tabloid-ready romance with Jennifer Lopez.

The actor-director reflects on the viciousness of some of the things written about him in magazines and newspapers at the time, including the line, “At the risk of generalizing, there may not be a person on the planet who is more socially acceptable to hate.”

“At the time, I knew on some level, ‘This is insane,’” he says of the hatred directed his way in the early-to-mid 2000s. “No one on the planet was more socially acceptable to hate? Really?”

He continues, “What was that guy’s name who killed his wife and dumped her off the side of a boat?… [Scott] Peterson. I remember thinking he actually gets slightly better treatment than I do in the press. At least they had to say ‘alleged killer.’”

Affleck adds, “Unfortunately there’s an aspect of that that’s like one of those fights you see on YouTube where one of them falls down and then a bunch of people who were standing around come over and kick the person. They don’t know them, they have no involvement in the fight, but they recognize a moment that they can get a free shot in, and for some people it’s just too much to resist. And that was definitely me at that point. I was the guy. I was the designated person to loathe.”

“The amount of venom — I must have touched some specific little place in the consciousness,” he says. “I don’t believe I didn’t deserve any negative judgment for anything, but it was just way out of whack.”

His headline-making relationship with Lopez in particular drew contempt from the public, in Affleck’s estimation, partly because there was a perception that he was courting the constant coverage of his personal life.

Affleck explains, “It was the last thing I wanted, and I could tell it was damaging me, and I tried to get away from it, but there was still this idea: This is what this guy wants, he’s a shallow guy, a camera whore or whatever. And there was no convincing people that that wasn’t the case.”

At the end of this rough period, he escaped.

“I think I just ran away. You can only handle so much,” says Affleck. “I moved for a while to this place in Georgia that I have, was able to get away, by and large, from stuff. Come up with a plan for how to do something with my life that doesn’t put me in the crosshairs of this sort of thing.”

It’s hard not to both like and admire Ben. His honesty in taking accountability for his part in perhaps starting the backlash is refreshing (he did make some bad career choices on his part with Gigli being the prime example). He deserved some bad press for the bad career choices, and in a way he did give off a fame whore image with the way he conducted himself in his romance with JLo. But the criticism was way out of whack. He was always a professional, never dissed the press or the public, and never hurt anyone.

Kristen Stewart would probably be the person today who gets the most flak and frankly she actually has done quite a bit to deserve it some of the negative attention with a pretty significant history of having a bad attitude, dissing both the press and the public while at the same time courting publicity, and yes, she did hurt some people (I know she wasn’t the only one). But having said that, the negative press and hate she inspires is way out of whack as well. In fact, I’d say the hatred Kristen gets makes Ben’s bad press look like a love letter to him. So far, it hasn’t hurt her career, she’s been resilient. She’s also looked great promoting Breaking Dawn Part 2 so maybe she’s not a lost cause after all.

I have never seen Kristen be anything but gracious with her fans….as for the paps they get what they deserve. The media shows her reaction to the paps but does not report what they say to her. Kristen has done Summit proud with her promotion of BD2 (past promotion as well). Kristen is also promoting OTR at the same time while representing Balenciaga and doing a great job with these two obligations as well. I agree with you that the media bullying Kristen at (22) has received makes Ben’s situation look like a walk in the park….I have watched her through this situation and realized she has a great strength of character and is one of a kind. A very brave person. I am looking forward to all of her future projects.

Kristen hasn’t really dissed her fans lately, I’ll give her that. But while promoting the first two Twilight movies she definitely did and there are too many examples to count. Fans overlooked it because, well, they’re fans. I’d disagree with your assessment of Kristen doing a “great job” with Balenciaga. She does a job that meets contractual obligations and appears to be available for promos for them which is more than can be said for some actresses, she doesn’t do a great job promoting the brand. She doesn’t wear their clothes when not contractually obligated to, came to the live sit down unprepared (her answers to questions were pretty inarticulate). She has been doing a great job with both OTR and BD2 promotions, I’ll say that’s true as well (and looked great at both the U.S. and London premieres of BD2). But even in promoting BD2 she couldn’t answer the simple question of who designed her dress. I’ve never seen an actress fail at that one. It’s not like you don’t know the question’s coming. Kristen has acted the part of a rebel, handled press badly, on numerous occasions did things to feed the firestorm against her, rarely takes accountability for her own part in the crazy storm she’s in (compare her behavior to Ben’s quotes above as an example of handling something with grace) and therefore made the media glare on her worse, and her affair with Rupert Sanders certainly doesn’t show a great strength of character. Again, I think the attacks on her are way out of line and she doesn’t deserve the way she’s being treated, but she certainly brought negative press upon herself by her own actions. The best thing she can do is exactly what she’s doing right now, keeping her professional commitments, looking fantastic, smiling (for once we are not seeing mopey pics of her at premieres), and keeping her attitude positive in her interviews. If she doesn’t do that, she will start to be hurt. Her fan base is mainly teenage girls and they are a fickle bunch.

Please keep in mind she is only 22. I pretty much disagree with most of your observations. I think Ben was 30 and had a lot more years hence experience when the media hounded him…..as for her interview promoting Florabotanica K could only answere the questions asked and really how many questions can you ask about how a perfume smells? The interviewer is to blame she could have incorporated questions about her career or upcoming movies being released as well if she ran out of questions…she is an actress after all. Yes she most definitely has a great strength of character as she has come out of the situation with Grace. You also fail to mention that RS was almost double her age(again a lot more experience), married and an employer. I could spar with you all night but most Kristen bashers have a one tract mind…K has picked up a ton of fans with her more mature performances in WTTR, Runaways and OTR she has a lot of fans that are not posting on gossip sites. She doesn’t need to change a thing as being herself has won her the respect of her fans and the acting community and I have no doubt she will be here a very long time. The fact that Ben Affleck (hollywoods it person right now) is knocking at her door speaks for itself. One last thing….Kristen smiles all the time and you apparently do not choose to see those pictures my advice to you is to not believe everything you see and read in tabloids…..they make people stupid.

Hello people…? This editorial is about Ben …. So ,Mr. Affleck , I agree with you. The treatmentyou recieved was hogwash basically…the paparatzi have become like a viruse and i do feel that a large majority of actors & actresses do this as a career because they have incredible talent and a passion for acting. I do not believe any level headed businessman or woman goes into this field to literally have their every move taped and every mistake blown way out of proportion. Think about it ,if you were a movie star right now in your prime ,I bet stepping out for a smoke or to grab a six pack is no longer the same freedom as non-celebs have. Just because the prettiest & most handsome smiles can also hide the most utterly lost feeling of sadness.

I agree with everything you have said about Kristen. I’m a long time fan of hers…and I am a year younger than her. She has always handled herself well and has from day one been the most gracious out of all the cast to her Twilight fans. What I don’t get is why people still claim she doesn’t smile? She does..all the time..it just media make people stupid by only using pictures of her not smiling. Yes Kristen screwed up big time with the Rupert scandal…but how she has handled herself through this makes me admire her even more. When you screw up like that..you just want to disappear from the world…but to have face the world, the fans, the questions and paps at the OTR premiere in Toronto and all the other obligations after the witch hunt…that’s brave. In our lives if we mess up, at least the whole world won’t know about it…and at least we can maybe move to another place and start over. But for Kristen..she can’t. That’s one thing as a fan I wish she could have.
