Avril Lavigne Reveals Secret Health Crisis: I Had Lyme Disease And Was “Bedridden For Five Months”
Avril Lavigne has spent nearly a year fighting a severe case of lyme disease. The singer reveals the news in this week’s People, shedding insight on her disappearance from the spotlight as she battled a mysterious illness.
As Gossip Cop reported, rumors swirled last fall when Lavigne seemingly went MIA, leading husband Chad Kroeger to deny in November that they had split, and Lavigne herself to hit back the next month at claims she was in rehab. At the time, the star had asked fans for prayers and expressed gratitude for “get well messages,” even though it wasn’t clear with what she was struggling. Now Lavigne explains she was completely debilitated after getting bit by what she believes was a tick last spring, but she didn’t get a diagnosis until October.
“I had no idea a bug bite could do this. I was bedridden for five months,” says Lavigne. She further admits, “I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move. I thought I was dying.” Lavigne’s mother moved into her Ontario home to care for her as Kroeger came in and out due to tour obligations. “There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand. It felt like having all your life sucked out of you,” she says.
Lavigne says the support from fans throughout the ordeal “touched me so deeply,” and now, at “80 percent better,” she’s ready to refocus on her career. The performer released the “Give You What You Like” music video last month, and plans to promote her new single “Fly” in conjunction with the Special Olympics. Calling her medical crisis a “wake-up call,” Lavigne tells People, “I really just want to enjoy life from here on out.” As Gossip Cop has reported, another famous star, Yolanda Foster, has also spent the last year battling Lyme Disease. Gossip Cop sends both well-wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery.
