The Avengers Breaks Second Weekend Records, Earns $104 Million

BOX OFFICE

(Marvel)

America’s favorite superheroes continued to dominate the box office in historic fashion.

After shattering records with a $207 million opening, The Avengers earned $103 million in its second weekend, not only throttling the current box office competition, but also topping the previous Week 2 high marks of blockbusters Avatar and The Dark Knight.

Both of those movies took in $75 million in their second weekends — a figure The Avengers easily soared past.

The Avengers also glided past the $1 billion mark globally.

The week’s big new release, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s vampire collaboration Dark Shadows, came in a very distant second with $28.8 million.

Nabbing third even further down was Think Like A Man with just $6.5 million in ticket sales.

The Hunger Games and The Lucky One finished in fourth and fifth places with $4.4 million and $4.1 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were The Five-Year Engagement ($3.2 million), Pirates! Band of Misfits ($3 million), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($2.7 million), the Edgar Allan Poe thriller The Raven ($2.5 million), and Chimpanzee ($1.7) million.

that’s only because of the price of tickets now compaired to then even a couple of cents makes a difference

As impressive as this is, the stats are higher because movies tickets are more expensive now (especially for 3D films). I’d really like to see how many people were actually in the theatre compared to the prior movies that held the record(s).

Avatar had 3D and IMAX also. And it’s only been 2-3 years since Avatar and TDK. Stop making excuses for the record being set. The movie is a really good movie and that’s that. Even taking into account inflation of prices and 3D/IMAX (only in TDK’s case), it still would beat the record by a comfortable margin.

Disney needs to give bonuses to Joss Whedon and the casts for doing such a great job putting this movie and script together. Even a million bonus each would not hurt the bottom line one bit since this will probably hit the 3 billion mark in 3 months internationally.

@Michael I was calling it as I see it that’s all

Completely agree, I just got back from seeing this movie and it was amazing! I want to go back and see it again, and I hate going to the theater, but it was so worth it! Action packed, great actors and effects, and so many comedic moments.

Do you work for Joss Whedon or on the payroll some how? You sure are very touchy when someone has a negative opinion about this movie. People can agree to disagree just because people have different opinion’s about this movie does not make them wrong.
