Audra McDonald: I Attempted Suicide
Audra McDonald has revealed a past suicide attempt.
The Tony-winning Broadway actress and onetime “Private Practice” star opens up about the dark chapter in her life in an interview for “Popcorn with Peter Travers.”
“When I was [in college] at Julliard, I had a suicide attempt,” says McDonald. “I tried to slit my wrist.”
She explains that her school helped to save her life.
McDonald explains, “When someone is suicidal, one of the first things you have to do is to protect them from themselves. They had a mental health facilitator there, a therapist there, and they checked me into a mental health hospital where I was for a month and got me the help I needed.”
The actress credits anti-depressants and career opportunities with helping her to overcome depression.
She’s now happily married, with a daughter and one of the most honored careers in the history of American theater.
