Anthony Anderson: Sam Smith Not At BET Awards “Because He’s White” (VIDEO)
Anthony Anderson joked that Sam Smith didn’t attend the BET Awards “because he’s white.” Watch the video below.
Smith was nominated for Best New Artist alongside Dej Loaf, Rae Sremmurd, Fetty Wap, Bobby Shmurda, and Tinashe. Kelly Rowland and Charlie Wilson were the category’s presenters, and announced that, for the first time ever, the winner sitting in the audience would receive a call from them on stage, as Samsung was sponsoring the award. When the cell phone rang out, there was confusion at first as a wig-clad Anderson, who was hosting the ceremony, took the stage.
As it turned out, the look was an attempt to impersonate Smith, who was the award’s winner, but not in attendance. Anderson went on to say, “Sam Smith isn’t here tonight because he’s white. He didn’t think he would win at the BET Awards, and he didn’t think he could win. But we showed him that we love him, too.”
Anderson then parodied Smith’s hit “Stay With Me,” singing, “This award is going to stay with me for you not showing up to BET. Although this trophy is really yours, it’s really gonna stay with me.” He was kidding, of course, and said more seriously, “Sam Smith, congratulations brother on your much-deserved award.”
“You can come by my house next week and pick it up, but call first, because black people don’t just be showing up to people’s houses like that,” added Anderson. It’s not clear why Smith REALLY didn’t attend the awards, although he has been recovering from vocal cord surgery, as Gossip Cop previously reported. Check out the BET Awards video below.
