Anne Hathaway to Star in The Taming of the Shrew: Report

(GettyImages.com)

Is Anne Hathaway about to take on Shakespeare?

That’s the buzz, with reports circulating that the actress is set to star in a new modern film adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew.

Hathaway would presumably play the title character Katherine, the sharp-tongued daughter of a wealthy townsman.

The script is being penned by Shame and The Iron Lady screenwriter Abi Morgan, according to The Wrap.

Shakespeare’s 16th century Italian play has been adapted before in Hollywood, the most notable version being Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s 1967 movie.

Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger’s 10 Thing I Hate About You is also loosely based on the play.

Gossip Cop has reached out to a rep for Hathaway to confirm the casting.

Do you think Hathaway is a good choice for the part?

Oh I have always wondered if they would remake this movie and it would be nice to see it.But who to play opposite her maybe Robert Pattinson! I am looking forward to this remake.

A “remake” of a movie would be based on an original that itself WAS a movie, usually. Coming out with a NEW film of “Taming of the Shrew” would be just another version of the Shakespeare play. The new “Great Gatsby” this summer is not actually a remake, but just another version of the novel. An actual remake was the “Psycho” in 1998, that was a frame-by-frame copy of the Hitchcock version (itself based on a novel though).

It was okay, but the original one with liz taylor and richard burton was much better and their chemistry was off the charts.

No. She’s too kind, sweet and good. Get someone who can really be a shrew. Get Lindsay Lohan.

Hathaway is annoying and the ultimate narcissist. Nothing she says is genuine and she’s a freaking looking piglet. She can’t act. I guess her hoebag ways got her the parts.
