Angelina Jolie Visits Syrian Refugee Children in Lebanon
Angelina Jolie has made a surprise visit to Lebanon, visiting refugee children displaced by nearby Syria’s long and bloody civil war.
The actress-director is a United Nations special envoy and has made similar humanitarian appearances in troubled regions around the world.
During her three-day trip, Jolie spent time with unaccompanied children staying in the Bekaa Valley, who have either been orphaned or separated from their parents and siblings.
“Meeting these children was a heart-rending experience,” said Jolie in a statement. “They have lost their families and their childhood has been hijacked by war. They are so young, yet they are bearing the burdens of their reality as if they are adults.”
She called on the international community to lend humanitarian assistance to Syrians affected by the conflict.
Jolie stated, “The generosity and solidarity shown by Lebanon and Lebanese to its neighbor serves as an example to the world for which we should all be grateful. We all need to help them bear this burden.”
