Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt Divorce Updates: Where Things Stand One Week Later
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s divorce rocked Hollywood and shook up the world of pop culture exactly one week ago. Gossip Cop is taking a look back at what went down and looking ahead to where things may go from here.
Jolie filed for divorce last Monday, September 19, but it wasn’t revealed publicly until the following day. Citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason behind the split, the actress’ divorce petition indicated they actually separated days prior, on September 15. It later emerged that the catalyst for the breakup was an argument that took place on September 14.
As Gossip Cop has reported, Jolie and Pitt were onboard an international flight with their children when they became engaged in an argument. Son Maddox intervened in his mother’s defense, and Pitt put his hands on him. The actor’s camp maintains this was not done in an aggressive or abusive way. Nonetheless, an anonymous complaint was filed with the Department of Child and Family Services.
And because the incident took place in the air as the plane traveled to the U.S. from France, the FBI also has jurisdiction over the matter. The situation is now being investigated as possible child abuse, but there has been no indication at this point that Pitt will actually face any charges. Still, Jolie requested sole physical custody of all six children, but Pitt is expected to request joint custody when he files his response.
Amidst all this, tabloids and webloids have peddled more than a dozen false stories. Gossip Cop has separated fact from fiction on the Jolie-Pitt divorce on three occasions so far. Among the untrue articles have been claims about Pitt going to rehab, Jolie hooking up with Johnny Depp, and even Jennifer Aniston weighing in on her ex’s divorce. None of these allegations, however, have been accurate.
So, what’s next? Pitt is angling to see his kids, who have been living with Jolie since the separation. He has retained his own attorney to handle the divorce proceedings, a significant portion of which will be guided by their prenuptial agreement. He and Jolie may come to an out-of-court settlement agreement, but as noted above, Pitt still needs to file his response to Jolie’s divorce petition.
Understandably, there’s a lot of interest when a celebrity couple who was together for more than 10 years decides to break up. Gossip Cop will continue to have updates as appropriate.
