Amy Schumer ‘Barbie’ Backlash: Twitter Mocks Casting News
Amy Schumer is in talks to star a live-action Barbie movie, it was announced Friday, but Twitter users are now mocking the casting news because the comedienne doesn’t physically resemble the iconic doll. See the tweets below, but be forewarned, many are quite offensive.
“Amy Schumer is going to play the live action Barbie? I had her pegged to play Miss Piggy in the live action version of the muppets,” tweeted one insensitive user. Another person wrote, “Amy Schumer is to Barbie what Michael Moore is to GI Joe,” while another similarly joked, “If Amy Schumer is Barbie, then Seth Rogen should be Ken.”
Another negative tweet read, “A fat unfunny slob for Barbie? I’m sure that’ll set a good example for little girls.” One person said, “It’s not that Amy Schumer shouldn’t play Barbie bc of her body type. It’s because of her sh*t personality and pasty ass face.” And another user asked, “Why is Amy Schumer, the living cabbage patch doll, playing a live action barbie I will never know.”
Meanwhile, one Twitter user said, “I hear @amyschumer is going to be in the new #Barbie movie. I’m wondering if she plays her chubby, dopey friend or what?” And another person wrote, “Amy Schumer starring as Barbie? Is it about Barbie really letting herself go? More proof Hollywood is out of touch.” There were many similarly insulting tweets posted about Schumer’s potential new role.
There’s a good chance, however, that the actress won’t be phased by the many outrageous and hurtful comments. Schumer has let it be known in the past that she doesn’t allow online trolls to get to her. Back in March, the comedienne posted an Instagram photo of herself in a bathing suit, and added the caption, “I meant to write ‘good morning trolls!’ I hope you find some joy in your lives today in a human interaction and not just in writing unkind things to a stranger you’ve never met who triggers something in you that makes you feel powerless and alone. This is how I look. I feel happy. I think I look strong and healthy and also like miss trunchbull from Matilda.”
