American Pharoah, rode by jockey Victor Espinoza, was the odds on favorite to win this year and managed to leave in the dust second place finisher Frosted at the 147th running of the race at Belmont Park. Keen Ice came in third. Though he was slow out of the gate, American Pharoah was in the lead the entire race.

The last horse to achieve the feat of a Triple Crown, winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, was Affirmed 37 years ago. Before that Seattle Slew won in 1977, Secretariat in 1973, and Citation back in 1948. American Pharoah is now the twelfth horse to attain horse racing’s highest achievement.

The owner of American Pharoah, Ahmed Zayat of Zayat Stables, took home $800,000 with Belmont Stakes victory. Zayat has said that American Pharaoh will probably retire come the end of 2015. And why not with a Triple Crown to his credit.
