American Idol Recap January 28 2016

On Thursday’s “American Idol,” the season 15 “Hollywood Week” continued with some brutal cuts during the group round, but many managed to shine.

As Gossip Cop reported, the first two days of “Hollywood Week” for the farewell season were broadcast on Wednesday’s show. The episode featured the 190 contestants who had received golden tickets during the initial auditions competing in the first stage of call-backs in Los Angeles. In lines of 10, the aspiring stars each had the chance to do a solo performance, and Jessica Cabral and Trent Harmon were among the standouts.

The next part, as seen on Thursday’s installment, was the always-dreaded group round, in which the remaining 108 contenders had to divide into groups of three or four to stage a performance. And despite performing together as a unit, anyone could be eliminated. The cuts were made on the spot, and Elvie Shane, Ashley Lilinoe, Cameron Richard, and Daniel Farmer were among the once-promising contestants given the boot for lackluster performances that just didn’t measure up.

The most surprising exit, though, was that of Poh. The younger sister of season 14 Top 24 singer Shi Scott actually quit the competition before even performing with her group. She went MIA during rehearsals, with her dad telling a staffer via phone that she couldn’t “do” it. Poh herself later told the cameras, “I’m deciding to leave the competition because I’m not ready. It’s just a big step in my life and I’m not there yet, and that’s okay.”

But who shined? The judges seemed particularly impressed with Tristan McIntosh, Avalon Young, Jeneve Rose Mitchell, Stephany Negrete, Thomas Stringfellow, and Manny Torres. And interestingly, Harmon, who was stricken with mono, as Gossip Cop previously reported, had to be a group of one after being ordered not to work with others since he was contagious. It marked the first time in the FOX show’s history that someone performed solo on group day, and he once again nailed it… despite being sick. Urban even told him, “I don’t think it’s your illness keeping everyone away from you. It’s your talent.”

Next week, the “Hollywood Week” editions will continue with the surviving contestants competing in one last solo round before the Top 24 is revealed. Stay tuned!
