American Idol Top 11 Sing National Anthem At NASCAR Auto 400 Club Race (VIDEO)
The “American Idol” Top 11 had the honor of singing the National Anthem on Sunday at the NASCAR Auto 400 Club Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. Watch below!
The contestants first found out they would be performing at the event during last Thursday’s live “American Idol.” The episode kicked off with Jeff Gordon making a surprise appearance for the announcement, saying, “I wanna give a personal invite to all the ‘Idols’ to come out on Sunday to the race in Fontana.” The group started cheering before Gordon could deliver the full news. “Not only are you guys gonna see a great race,” he continued, “but you’re gonna sing the National Anthem.”
Gordon also revealed they would serve as the race’s grand marshal, and the singers appeared thoroughly overwhelmed. And that shock hadn’t worn off by Sunday. Contestant Rayvon Owen tweeted before the performance, “I’ve lived near a racetrack all my life & I never thought my 1st race would be singing the anthem.”
No one, however, should’ve been more excited than Qaasim Middleton. As Gossip Cop reported, Thursday’s episode was supposed to cut the batch of remaining contestants down to 10, and then only those 10 would be the lucky ones to perform at the NASCAR competition. But after Middleton won the judges’ lone save of the season in the final seconds of the episode, the group remained at 11, allowing him to join his “Idol” competitiors at the big race.
