Amber Heard In Domestic Violence PSA – WATCH VIDEO
Amber Heard stars in a new domestic violence PSA released on Friday. Watch below.
As Gossip Cop has reported, earlier this year, Heard accused husband Johnny Depp of physically and verbally abusing her throughout their 15-month marriage. Though he denied the allegations, they reached a $7 million settlement to avoid battling in court. Heard vowed to donate the money to charity, but then objected when Depp sent the payment directly to the organizations himself.
Now three months later, Heard has partnered with the Girlgaze Project in honor of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Towards Women. The PSA, which is slightly over 2 minutes in length, begins with the actress asking incredulously, “How is this happening to me? You know? I’m strong. I’m smart. I’m not a victim.”
“I guess there was a lot of shame attached to that label of ‘victim,’ Heard goes on. “It happens to so many women. When it happens in your home behind closed doors with someone you love, it’s not as straight-forward [as] if a stranger did this.”
Heard chokes up as she recalls “telling someone safe” about her alleged abuse. “If I hadn’t had a few people that I really trust around me — a few women, a few friends — if I didn’t have them around me, how different my life would be,” she says.
Of being in this situation on the “public stage,” the movie star comments, “I have a unique opportunity to remind other women not only that this doesn’t have to be the way it is, you don’t have to do it alone. You’re not alone. And also, we can change this.”
“We need to take responsibility for how we talk about these things,” Heard further argues. “It’s the only way people are going to feel comfortable coming forward, raising their voices and standing up for themselves.” She urges, “Speak up.” Check out the full video below.
