“Zootopia” Beat “Allegiant” At Weekend Box Office For Third Win A Row
A dystopian future with scientifically-engineered people was no match for a metropolis full of animals, at least at this weekend’s box office, where Zootopia beat the opening of The Divergent Series: Allegiant. Disney’s Zootopia easily scored its third win in a row this weekend. The animated film, featuring the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, hangs on to the number one spot on the Top 10 chart with $38 million in ticket sales.
Allegiant, the third film in the Divergent franchise, had to settle for second place, with a haul of $29.1 million. That makes it the lowest-debuting film in the trilogy. In somewhat contrast, Jennifer Garner’s Miracles From Heaven came in third with an impressive $15 million for a faith-based film. 10 Cloverfield Lane and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool came in fourth and fifth places with $12.5 million and $8 million, respectively.
Rounding out the Top 10 were London Has Fallen in sixth with $6.9 million, followed distantly by seventh-place finisher Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, with $2.8 million. Meanwhile, The Perfect Match nabbed the eighth position with $1.9 million, while Sasha Baron Cohen’s The Brothers Grimsby earned a measly $1.4 million. And just making this week’s Top 10 was The Revenant, which earned Best Actor and Best Director awards at the Oscars. It took in $1.2 million.
