VIDEO: Alex Preston “Hits Bullseye” With American Idol’s First One Direction Cover
Alex Preston “hit the bullseye” with the first-ever One Direction cover on “American Idol” on Wednesday. The contestant performed a slightly reworked version of “Story of My Life,” winning unanimous praise from the judges.
“You just hit the bullseye on the artistry target,” Harry Connick Jr. told him afterward. “You have been so consistent with your artistic choices that I’m really starting to understand who you are.” He added, “I think you may be leading the pack in that category. Really nice job, Alex.”
Keith Urban agreed, saying, “What’s interesting about this stage of the journey is I think we’re starting to see where the artists are coming in — that was great.” “It was like you merged American Authors with 1D and you made it your own,” said the judge.
And Jennifer Lopez declared, “I loved it. I thought your vocal was so beautiful. I was so in the song with you the entire time.” “When we talk about owning the stage, that was it,” she went on, adding, “You evoke greatness.”
Preston is one of just 10 contestants remaining in season 13 of the music competition. This week’s theme was Billboard Top 10 Charts. The One Direction hit not surprisingly qualified.
