Alex Preston Gets Standing O for Rihanna’s “Stay” on Idol (VIDEO)
Alex Preston received a standing ovation for a gorgeous cover of “Stay” on Wednesday’s “American Idol.” With just 3 contestants left, all had to face off in three separate rounds.
The Top 3 finalist also performed “Pompei” by Bastille and again performed “Story of My Life” by One Direction, As Gossip Cop reported at the time, Preston previously performed the boy band’s hit back in March, after which he was told he “hit the bulleye.”
This time around, however, it was the moving Rihanna ballad chosen by the judges that earned him the most praise. It had actually been chosen for Preston by the judges, a pairing that clearly could not have gone any better.
Jennifer Lopez told Preston, “I knew you would sing the heck out of that. Oh my god, it was beautiful.” She went on, “It was all yours. We forgot about Rihanna. We forgot about Mikky Ekko,” before admitting she got “goosies.”
Harry Connick Jr. called the performance “really, really strong,” noting, “I could go on and on about all the things I love about it.” And Keith Urban said, “For me you, just owned that song.”
