Alex Preston was one of Harry Connick Jr.’s “favorite performance[s] of the night” on “American Idol” on Wednesday. The crooner took on “A Team” by Ed Sheeran, and the crowd went crazy with cheers.
“I agree with them, Alex,” Jennifer Lopez said when it was finally quiet enough for her to talk. She went on, “And that’s why I let them have a moment, because you deserve that applause.”
Connick told Preston that the track, which was chosen for him by competitor Dexter Roberts, was the “perfect, perfect song,” and allowed the contestant to show his “conviction.” “This was my favorite performance of the night, by the way,” said the judge, only later amending that statement after Jena Irene’s outstanding closing song.
And Keith Urban said, “You’ve got your signature things that you do… When you put them in songs, they’re so natural.” “That was so great,” he added.
Preston’s praise came towards the end of Top 7 night, in which each contestant’s song was selected by one of his or her competitors. Luckily for Preston, this pairing more than worked out. Considering this is a competition, Roberts might be having some regrets right around now.
Of course, the judges’ praise only goes so far. It’s up to America to determine who makes it to next week, and well, there’s been plenty of shocks and surprises before!
