Al Roker, Billy Bush Fight Over Ryan Lochte: “He Lied!” (VIDEO)
As Gossip Cop reported, Lochte claimed he was robbed at gunpoint in Rio while making his way back to the Olympic village last weekend. Police were unable to corroborate his version of events, and it emerged that Lochte was actually in an altercation at a local gas station, where an armed security guard demanded payment for alleged vandalism. On Friday, Lochte issued an apology statement for his behavior.
During the ongoing “Today” coverage of the Olympics, Roker and Bush had an increasingly tense argument over whether Lochte “lied” or “embellished.” Bush, to whom Lochte first told his robbery story, believed the “kid” only messed up “some details.” But Roker wasn’t having it.
“He lied. He lied to you. He lied to Matt Lauer. He lied to his mom. He left his team mates hanging while he skedaddled,” Roker said. He went on, “There was no robbery. There was no pull-over. There was nothing. Nobody cocked a gun to his head. He lied!”
Natalie Morales was firmly on Roker’s side, and after the broadcast, Bush tweeted, “Playing devils advocate is not agreeing with or endorsing someone’s overall actions. It’s just not interesting watching a 3 way beat down.” Meanwhile, veteran “Today” anchor Matt Lauer scored a new on-camera interview with Lochte that will air on NBC on Saturday night and Monday morning.
While Roker and Bush’s intense debate took place on Friday, an edited version with sound effects began circulating on Twitter on Saturday, leading the meterologist’s name to become a trending topic. Check out both versions below.
