Adele Gives ‘The Finger’ at Brit Awards

Truth rating: 10

Well, that’s one way to ruin a special moment.

At the Brit Awards Tuesday, an ecstatic Adele was abruptly cut off while making her acceptance speech for Album of the Year.

Just as the singer was gushing about how proud she was to be British, host James Corden interrupted and tried to move things along a little, uh, quicker.

Needless to say, Adele was not pleased, and held up a certain finger in reaction.

After the show, the songstress offered her apologies, saying, “I flipped the bird for the suits at The Brits who cut me off.”

“Sorry if I offended anyone but it was for them, not for the fans,” she added.

I’m going to have to side with Adele here. She won the award and that was her moment and they were cutting her off? That was her moment — one she’d worked hard for and they ruined that moment. I don’t blame her for being angry. Should she have flipped the bird on television? No. But I certainly understand the anger behind it.

Well another British musician, M.I.A. did flip the bird for a different reason at the Super Bowl recently… but your right, time constraints was blamed and I don’t think she needs to be cut-off because of that.

  • Nick

I would have cut off the MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOing too

  • Me

Been hanging out with MIA I see.

  • Guest

Its like the ’09 VMA awards all over again. The brits are Kanye West and Adele is Taylor Swift. At least Adele did something about it. Go girl!

  • Anonymous

It’s really funny how right after Kristen Stewart gets attacked for flipping the bird…M.I.A and Adele do it on live tv. But no one attacks and says such horrible things to them, like the things that were said to Stewart. And it seems Stewart did it in a playful manner that was not meant to be caught by cameras. And if it was, then it was probably aimed at the uncouth paparazzi. Adele and M.I.A have done it on live television. Whatever the reason, giving the middle finger like that is not justifiable, although I can sympathize with Adele as she was treated unfairly.

  • Anonymous

YES! AGREE! I was just about to bring up the same thing but of course Kristen gets called all the nasty names on earth but anyone else and all I hear is crickets. Ugh hypocrites!

  • Laura

I would possibly give her a pass but this is kind of a string of unclassy stuff by adele- I mean, who chews gum on stage at the Grammys?! just kind of immature stuff…I think she needs to grow up a little. Though I understand in Europe this kind of stuff isn’t that big of a deal.

  • Sheelly

MIA was harangued. You obviously weren’t paying attention when the NFL apologized, NBC apologized, and Madge expressed her annoyance…

  • Sup

    Jealous much?

  • Anonymous

Yeah I know about all that eg NBC apologising, Madonna – what I’m saying is none of these posts and forums blew up with scathing remarks about M.I.A, whereas for Kristen..she was basically called every name in the book. People basically attacked her and her giving the middle finger wasn’t even meant to be publicized. It was clear she was doing it as a joke or directing it to the paps.

  • Kylie

If she was doing it to the paps then it would be a given that it would be up for sale and posted. She has also done it several different times before this I’ve heard? I don’t really know since I wasn’t there to see this happen at any given time nor do I know why she has done it. Both MIA and Adele are older than Kristen as well, with a different, older fan base so that might also be the reason why, so many younger rob fans went bat shit crazy, people who probably haven’t heard of MIA other than that one song about getting high like a plane. Though as you did say, it was on national, live tv when MIA did it, but she has always had that “I don’t give a crap” attitude so all in all it’s not all that scandalous or shocking from her.
As for Adele, she was also always like that from what I gather, and she had a reason at point in time and she did say sorry, though snarky, but still understandable.
So all in all, it just seems to depend on who your fans, or haters, are, for that matter.

  • Tora

Does everything on this site have to relate back to Kristen Stewart somehow. She isn’t that important and she has much less talent then Adele.

  • Guest

She is only 23 how old do you expect her to act.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OUTD24SZRDBODNHSJLT62HVWOA Jim

“none of these posts and forums blew up with scathing remarks about M.I.A.” … because no one cares about M.I.A.

  • cinchi

I understand the host was trying to move the show along, but isn’t there a well established protocol (i.e. has been established across all shows for decades now) that the band begins to play to let the person accepting the speech know they need to wrap it up rather than interrupting a person mid-acceptance and literally carrying on the show. I would say giving the middle finger is a classless obnoxious thing to do, but interrupting her mid-speech and introducing the next performer is far more offensive and something I’ve never seen a host do to anyone before. As far as comparisons to M.I.A., M.I.A. did it to be controversial and provoke, not because anyone did anything to M.I.A. to provoke a middle finger. I think the awards show should be apologizing to Adele, and after receiving an apology, Adele should apologize back to the awards show (she already apologized to fans who misinterpreted). The nonsense about Kristen Stewart is just that – nonsense. Unless you’re a huge Twilight fan, you probably weren’t even aware Kristen flipped anyone the bird. It certainly wasn’t national news like M.I.A. and Adele. If you are a fan of Kristen’s, you’d do her a big favor not constantly drawing attention to her bad antics and then defending them. For the record, Kristen has not had a good history with the press, most of which is Kristen’s own fault by being insolent. Some of the things Kristen has had to deal with from the press should make her upset (such as a british tabloid putting a price on her head) so I have empathy for her with some things, but she’s created much of the bad press through her own actions and not the actions of people who don’t care for her posting comments on blogs. My advice is if you truly are a fan of Kristen’s, stop bringing this stuff up. She’s handling press much better than in the past and has some big movies coming out soon. The best way to support her is to go see her movies.

That fat cow should lose some weight, before she gets so high and mighty. I can’t stand her. I love her songs , but she has some serious issues to battle.

  • Fran

she seems to be really changing. Firstly her gum chewing was soooo annoying. Than saying she would spit on her father. She dresses classy but she doesn’t act that classy.

Adele is a strong woman and reacts swiftly without hesitation. Some people would get so shocked and unable to talk back, but not our Adele. I’m proud of her! Hello Adele from Delaware!

Emma & Vanquish, this story is about Adele, why would you try and make it about someone else?? Believe it or not, there are people out here that do not hero worship the actors from Twilight and did not notice what you are talking about. Does she need publicity? Lets stick with the story.

  • mlj (Team Pea Coat)

    Oh jeez…. grow up.

  • Anonymous

I’m trying to make a comparison as to how people are reacting when someone else has given the finger. That’s all.

  • Anonymous

I’m trying to make a comparison here…not making the story about Stewart…but seeing how people react when another famous name does what Kristen did but on a much larger scale. It’s not about publicity, but understanding the mentality of people and trying to make a point. And how strongly they react when Kristen does the same thing that Adele has just done. So really I am sticking with the story, just bringing a different angle to things and highlighting double standards.

  • Anonymous

You make a really good point. Didn’t think of it that way. Thanks. BTW I am an Adele fan. Not picking on her…she just makes a good case study to relate to. Lol.

  • Leelea

Kristen is only 21 and look at the shit she got for flipping a bird.

  • Kylie

I didn’t think you were, I’m also an Adele fan and I personally don’t like MIA, nor am I a huge fan of Kristen, but I for one wouldn’t go crazy over the middle finger thing, it’s her choice in what she does. Then again I’m also not a huge Rob fan, so that might be why I’m mutual over it :).
PS: I wasn’t trying to sound like a bitch (if it seems that way) in the last comment, nor in this one, just thought I’d give my opinion/point of view of your question.

  • Nick

    of her $$$ …yeah!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brenda-Mills/100000377591626 Brenda Mills

The point I am making is that I clicked on this story because of Adele. I do not care about Kristen, if I want to know anything about her or anyone else for that matter, I will go to their sites. Did anyone indicate that they sure would like to see this from a different angle?

  • Anonymous

Well if you didn’t care about Kristen you could have just ignored my comment to save yourself from all this hassle. It’s simple really. And no, no one else indicated that they wanted to see this from a different angle. Perhaps no one had thought of viewing it in such a way? I just wanted to put it out there from a discussion point of view. Was that wrong to do so? I wanted to discuss it so I did. I’m not forcing anyone to respond or read it. :)

Apparently, you don’t know the facts about Adele’s “father” or you would understand why she made that statement about him. He walked out of her life when she was 3 years old and she was raised by a her mother who was a teenager and single. Her father was never there for her the majority of her life on this planet and is only looking to get back into her life because now she is successful and very wealthy. So before you go making any judgments about her saying that she would spit on her father, consider her reasons for it.

  • jae

Adele made a public statement as to who she was flipping off and why so there would be no mistaking her reasons for it. That says a lot about her as a person. She did not mean for the fans or anyone in the audience to be offended but she was flipping off the suits that were running the show that cut her moment short. If I was her, I would have done it too.

  • i agree completely.
