Adam Levine of “The Voice” Blasts Rival “Idol” for How It Treats Gay Performers

Adam Levine, who’s a coach on “The Voice” when he’s not fronting the band Maroon 5, took a swipe at rival singing competition show, “American Idol.”

After talking about his younger brother being gay, Levine tells Out magazine that unlike “The Voice,” where two of its finalists, Beverly McClellan and Vicci Martinez, were open about their sexuality, he feels “American Idol” tries to make its own contestants hide theirs.

Levine blasts, “What’s always pissed me off about ‘Idol’ is wanting to mask that, for that to go unspoken. C’mon. You can’t be publicly gay? At this point? On a singing competition? Give me a break. You can’t hide basic components of these people’s lives. The fact that ‘The Voice’ didn’t have any qualms about being completely open about it is a great thing.”

He adds that “The Voice” is a better show “because it doesn’t alienate anybody.”

What do you think about Levine’s comparison?

    he’s right

Not the biggest fan Of Mr Levine, but he makes sense on this.

He is right. Even though Adam Lambert had been openly gay in his private life for years they wouldn’t allow him to talk about it until after the finale. The Voice is a better show.

He does have a valid point on that.

I also like that it allows people older than 12 years to compete. I know Idol is trying to capture the younger audiences, but talent is relegated to the first 2 decades of life. There are talented individuals who sing way into their 80′s, and some aren’t discovered until they are in their 40′s (Hello Susan Boyle).

    ISN’T relegated. Damn auto correct.

Adam Levine is just an honest, up-front kind of guy. Of course he’s right.

But American Idol is trying to appeal to a wide swath of the U.S. These are the same people who think Sarah Palin – who “tolerates” gays – is presidential material and Michelle Bachmann’s husband can pray the gay away.

What do I think? I think that in a singing contest, the emphasis should be on how you sing, not who you sleep with. Why would that even be brought up? Are you a singer or are you a gay singer? I didn’t know there was a differentiation.

JustaVoice – In a perfect world you would be right, of course. But as long as people are mocked, beat up, made to feel so bad about themselves that they decide to end their lives and are just plain murdered for a genetic difference, then visibility is power.

And in a country where people can vote on your rights, not speaking up and coming out is political death.

Well, I’ve actually walked through most of what you listed above, and this is what it taught me. 1.Treat others as I want to be treated.2.Pray for those who hurt me.3.If I enter a singing contest, I don’t want to be known as the best (insert gender)singer, or the best(insert skin color)singer or the best (insert disability etc) singer. I would want to win because I’m the one with the best voice…then we’ve all united in something above stereotypes.

Love Adam. He’s right. I am still ticked about how Idol robbed Adam Lambert. That’s Fox for you. Not everyone on The Voice is ok with gays, however. I will never forget the look on Blake Shelton’s face when he turned around and saw that red-headed guy he had just picked. I told my husband, “that poor guy is so gone as soon as Shelton has a chance to boot him…” and I was right. First chance! The poor guy was out the door!

    Like I said….in a perfect world.
