Gossip Cop already gets too little sleep having to monitor weekly tabloids, daily newspapers, hourly blog chatter, etc. But now we’ll have even fewer Z’s given the rise of a whole new breed of bad gossip to combat – Twitter celebrity impersonators.

Someone claiming to be screen legend Lauren Bacall created an uproar among our beloved Twilighters this week when she Tweeted about watching the movie and coming away cold. “Yes I saw Twilight my granddaughter made me watch it, she said it was the greatest vampire film ever. After the ‘film’ was over I wanted to smack her accros (sic) her head with my shoe, but I do not want a book called Grannie Dearest written on me when I die.” The so-called “Bacall” then recommended that everyone “watch ‘Nosferatu’ instead,” referring to the 1920s silent film based on Dracula. The star’s anti-Twilight comments spread like crazy as media outlets picked them up.

One tiny problem: Bacall never said any of it. Not a word. Not the real Bacall, anyway. In fact, a rep for the actress told Access Hollywood that Bacall “knows nothing” of Twitter.

This isn’t the only time this week that a fake celeb made real trouble. Gossip Cop fan Kristen Bellfresh off a ridiculous fire rumor in the Star that we extinguished – had to contend yesterday with a poser who not only claimed to be her, but also “broke up” on Twitter with her boyfriend, Dax Shepard. Bell, unlike Bacall, IS a Tweeter, and got out the word to fans that the pretender was a fake. But not before some damage was already done.

Another high-profile Tweeter – Nicky Hiltonalso found herself having to unmask an impersonator this week.

Gossip Cop will do our best to take down Twitter phonies.
