7-Year-Old Girl Survives Plane Crash That Kills Family (VIDEO)
A 7-year-old girl survived a plane crash that killed her family in rural Kentucky and then wandered bloodied and barefoot from the wreckage, eventually finding a stranger to help her after the unimaginable tragedy. See the video below.
Late Friday, 71-year-old Larry Wilkins heard a knock at his door in Kuttawa and found the terrified and crying child. “I come to the door and there’s a little girl, 7 years old, bloody nose, bloody arms, bloody legs, one sock, no shoes, crying,” Wilkins told The Associated Press on Saturday. “She told me that her mom and dad were dead, and she had been in a plane crash, and the plane was upside down.”
Officials raced to the scene and discovered a Piper PA-34 had indeed crash landed into a wooded area. The plane was flying from Florida to Illinois when it crashed. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft shortly after it reported engine trouble. Investigators are still trying to determine exactly what went wrong.
Marty and Kimberly Gutzler, the girl’s parents pictured above, died in the crash. Her nine-year-old sister Piper was also killed, as was a 14-year-old cousin named Sierra Wilder. The family hailed from Nashville, Illinois. The surviving girl has not been identified. She was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital and released on Saturday.
“This girl came out of the wreckage herself and found the closest residence and reported the plane crash,” Kentucky State Police official Dean Patterson told reporters. “It’s a miracle in a sense that she survived it, but it’s tragic that four others didn’t.” Wilkins, the man who helped the child, said, “I felt so sorry for her, tears come to my eyes. Seven years old. Brave little girl.”
